Hey, WPMS and the DEN are both over a century old. You knew that right? Okay, State Senator Pete Goicoechea has introduced a bill into the Senate for $60 million for the building of a new K-8 facility. We very much need people to contact legislators and folks of influence to help make this happen.
Why not just keep fixing these buildings? Seriously! An architectural study found it would take $14.6 million to fully fix the middle school whereas a new 6-8 building would be $16 million. NRS law says you're supposed to replace buildings once you're over 40% in repair costs. WPMS is at 91%.
We happen to be tapped out on our ability to tax and bond this locally by state law. The "new" high school is still being paid off through 2034. We do not have a local funding method. Superintendent Young and Finance Officer Johnson have been seeking out funding sources for over a decade to no resolve. Now, Senator Goicoechea has stepped up and might just make this happen for us. Thanks Pete. We have to urge other legislators and the governor to agree and vote for this funding.
Now, as a first step, you can help by watching the video that I'll post below and by commenting on the SB 100 legislative page. With this little assistance from you and many others, we're attempting to invest in today to prepare for our future generations.
