From the Mayor’s Office:
Good morning everyone! I hope you’re doing well and enjoying your Saturday. I have a few things to share this week, so let’s get right to it.

First, congratulations to Officer Shelbie Leeper, who was promoted to Sergeant with the Elyria Police Department this week. It was an honor to swear her in. Congratulations, Sergeant Leeper, and thank you for your continued service to Elyria.

This week we cut the ribbon at The Open Door Center, a new counseling and community center at 300 Fourth Street. It’s great to see a new resource opening its doors in Elyria and adding something positive to the community. Congratulations to everyone involved!

I stopped by the new Public Works Complex to check out the construction progress. The sanitation truck bays are complete, steel is going up for the main building, and the walls are now being built for the new evidence building. This is a massive project. I’ll leave a few photos below to give you an idea of the scale.

This evening we have some great events happening in Ely Square. As part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, Lorain County will be planting a Heritage Tree in the Square. The program begins at 5:30 p.m., with the tree planting at 6 p.m.

Following that, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra concert begins at 7 p.m. Food trucks will be there, so bring your chairs and come spend the evening with us. This is always a popular event, so get there a little early!

And one more thing to get on your calendar. Our Elyria Police and Fire Departments will face off in a charity softball game on October 17. The friendly competition will benefit The Pioneer Freedge. We’ll have plenty more to share as we get closer.

Street Paving

Beginning Friday, September 4, paving will begin on the following previously milled streets:

Hamilton Avenue between Washington Avenue and Glenwood Street
Furnace Street between Bell Avenue and State Route 57
Bond Street between West River Road and Furnace Street
Erie Street between West River Road and Lorain Boulevard
Florence Court
Persons Court

No parking will be permitted in these work zones from 7:00am until 7:00pm on September 4, or while crews are present.
Paving is anticipated to be completed by the evening of Friday, September 4.
Access to driveways will be maintained throughout the project.
Traffic will be maintained; however, delays should be expected.

Please plan accordingly, use alternate routes when possible, and use extra caution while traveling through the work zone. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while this improvement project is completed.

⚠️ Stay weather aware today. Follow local media and the US National Weather Service Cleveland OH for the latest.

There is now an ENHANCED RISK (level 3 of 5) for severe weather across parts of Northeast OH and Northwest PA for later today. Confidence is increasing in a cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms moving southeast across the area this evening. Damaging winds are expected to be the primary severe weather threat with these storms. Flash flooding, isolated hail, and perhaps a brief tornado are also possible.

Hydrant Flushing 9/3/2026
Water Distribution will be flushing hydrants on the Following streets on 9/3/2026. Customers in the area may experience some water discoloration due to hydrant flushing. This will only be temporary.

Customers should run the cold water in the home until the water clears.
