From the Mayor’s Office:
Since Saturday evening, I've heard from many concerned residents about this incident. I've been in communication with Chief Welsh to ensure additional information would be shared with the public as quickly as possible. I also had the opportunity to review the body-worn camera footage myself.

After reviewing the footage, I had strong concerns regarding one officer's actions. Chief Welsh shared those concerns, and I appreciate his decision to release the footage quickly and take immediate steps to address those concerns.

Chief Welsh has released a statement with additional information about the incident, along with the body-worn camera footage. You can view that information below.

Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining the public's trust. I appreciate everyone's patience as we've worked to gather the facts and provide additional information as quickly as possible.

Water Distribution will be flushing hydrants on the Following streets on 6/22/2026. Customers in the area may experience some water discoloration due to hydrant flushing. This will only be temporary. Good afternoon Elyria, and Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth marks the day when the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This federal holiday gives us an opportunity to reflect on that important chapter in our collective history and celebrate freedom together.

Join me tomorrow in downtown Elyria for our 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. The day begins with a commemorative parade and continues with live entertainment, food trucks, vendors, family activities, educational exhibits, and much more in Ely Square. I'll also have the honor of presenting several proclamations during the celebration.

I'll leave the full schedule of tomorrow's events below so you can see everything that's planned throughout the day.

I want to extend a sincere thank you to the Elyria Black Legacy Connection for leading the way, along with all of the organizations, sponsors, volunteers, city staff, and community partners who continue to grow this celebration year after year. Events like this take a tremendous amount of teamwork behind the scenes, and we truly appreciate everyone who helps make it possible.

One quick reminder: City Hall is closed today, and there is no sanitation service. Trash collection will resume tomorrow, Saturday.
