BARRICADE INCIDENT RESULTS IN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING
Elyria, OH ā On October 7, 2026, an Elyria police officer discharged his service weapon during a barricade incident at Bridge Pointe Commons on East Bridge Street, striking a 46-year-old male.
The male was transported to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.
The incident began on October 6, 2026, at approximately 10:08 p.m., when officers responded to a disturbance involving the male, who was experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening officers while displaying a knife. Officers evacuated neighboring apartments and attempted to negotiate with him. After unsuccessful attempts to gain his cooperation, officers withdrew to allow a cooling-off period and connect the suspect with mental health resources.
On October 7, felony arrest warrants were issued for Aggravated Menacing, Making Terrorist Threats, Obstructing Official Business, and Intimidation. Detectives also obtained a search warrant for the residence. Police contacted mental health resources and attempted to establish communication with the suspect, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
At approximately 9:00 a.m., officers and detectives were called back to the manās apartment after receiving additional calls from a resident reporting that he was creating a disturbance and making further threats. The male remained inside his apartment, refused to surrender, and continued threatening to kill officers and others known to him. Officers secured the area and evacuated neighboring apartments.
The Elyria Police Special Response Team and crisis negotiators were activated and spent several hours attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender. Less-lethal chemical mu*****ns were deployed into the apartment, and negotiations continued as officers worked to resolve the incident safely.
At approximately 2:24 p.m., an Elyria police officer discharged his service weapon, striking the male. Officers then secured him and the scene. Elyria Fire Department tactical medics immediately provided medical aid. Lifecare Ambulance, which was staged at the scene, transported the male to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.
The extent of his injuries is not yet known. He was communicating with medical personnel immediately following the incident and remains under police guard. His identity is not being released at this time pending notification to immediate family.
The Lorain Police Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. To preserve the integrity of the independent investigation, the Elyria Police Department will not provide further comment or information regarding the officer-involved shooting.
