On August 21st, one of our dispatchers received an emergency call from an expectant mother whose water had broken. He handled the call with professionalism, compassion, and calm under pressure until he encountered a technical issue and needed assistance.

Without hesitation, his partner, Dispatcher Samantha Deighton, jumped into action. She seamlessly took over the call, quickly assessed the situation, and provided childbirth instructions. Within minutes of picking up the call, Samantha guided the caller and this now mother of three through the safe delivery of her beautiful baby boy!

Congratulations to Mom on the arrival of your newest little one! 💙

Outstanding work Samantha! Shout out to the initial dispatcher too for quickly realizing assistance was needed.

And, of course… Happy Birthday to this sweet baby boy! 🎉👶

We had some visitors trying to interfere with our radio signals or maybe just airing out their wings because of the humidity. Whatever the reason…it was an odd sight, them just sitting on our tower, all spread eagle, pun intended! 😂 👀 🦅

Shout out to everyone who handled this call. I couldn't be more proud of the dispatchers from Platoons B and D. From the first phone call, to getting mutual aid, and keeping track of all the trucks on the board, they truly showed what this agency is capable of during a mass casualty event, while still handling regular 911 calls.

Dispatchers Tucker, Hoover, Liles, Connell, Fay, Thompson, Nowak, Horton, Deighton, Smith, Eging, and Stuper all stepped up.

Supervisors Trifiletti and Midkiff led a coordinated effort, and made sure the job got done efficiently and effectively.

Great work team, and great work to all the responding agencies in the field.

* Until 900 AM EDT. * At 758 AM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Western Vermilion to near Wakeman, moving east at 45 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to trees and power lines.

We have a new Fire Chief!

Congratulations to Chief Kevin Laux in being selected as the Village of Grafton's new Fire Chief last night.

According to Mayor Charlie Duke, it was a rigorous interview process, and council believed he was the best man for the job. "He lives in Grafton and knows the people, the layout and that's very beneficial for a public employee servant. Myself and council look forward to all he will do to take our fire department to the next level. He's got the youth and vigor, and is up to the challenge. I think he'll do a fine job," Duke said.

Laux has served the Village of Grafton Fire Department since 2019. He works full-time as a firefighter/paramedic for the Oberlin Fire Department. Before that, he served with the Alliance Fire Department.

He trains to do the job right, holding certifications in firefighting, paramedicine, fire instruction, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire inspection, and child passenger safety.

Laux learned public service at home. His grandfather served as a captain with the Brunswick Fire Department. His uncle retired as a lieutenant from Brunswick and now serves as Fire Chief in Hinckley Township.

Grafton is his home. He grew up here. His fiancée, Stephanie, and he own a home on Chestnut Street. He calls Grafton home, plans to spend his career serving and protecting the people of this fair village. Congratulations to Chief Laux!
