Emerald Isle Public Works Department Provides street and beach maintenance. The Emerald Isle Public Works Department provides many services to our residents and vacationers, including litter pick-up on the beach strand and along the NC-58 right-of-way, street and street sign maintenance, storm water control, mosquito control, right-of-way sight path clearing, town fleet vehicle maintenance and facility maintenance.

The Public Works Department consists of 9 full time employees to maintain over 48 miles of street and 12 miles of ocean front beach. We maintain over 50 individual vehicles and heavy equipment, not to mention various other small engine pieces. We are located directly behind Fire Station 1 at 206 Maritime Forest Dr. This is a family-friendly page so we ask that you please keep your comments and walls posts clean. The Town of Emerald Isle is thrilled to announce the arrival of its newest event, Trucks & Treats, on Saturday, October 31, 2020. Trucks & Treats is a socially distanced Halloween event that will be held from 10:00 AM until Noon, at the Eastern Ocean Regional Access (EORA) located at 2701 Emerald Drive.Preregistration is required, as the event is open to the first 300 children (ages 12 & under) that sign up. To register, parents are asked to contact the Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation Department at 252-354-6350.

Tower 4 arrived late last week, crews worked diligently on up fitting the new apparatus. Today, ECI Communications installed Kenwood Dual Band communication units, officially placing the apparatus in service.

Over the next several months crews will conduct training on the apparatus, along with equipment carried on this apparatus. Strategic apparatus placement along with emergency vehicle operations will be honed during the courses.

Huge thank you to our community, we are humbled by the outstanding support from our elected officials and administration from the top down! Staff & members are proud to serve the citizens of Emerald Isle.

The Town of Emerald Isle received the following notice today from NCDOT. We will share this information on each of our public media outlets: Town website, Facebook, Twitter, EI APP, and e-mail subscriber list.

Per the following NCDOT release, construction is scheduled to begin on Wednesday September 16, 2020. NCDOT anticipates construction to continue through March of 2021.
NOTE: Single lane closures are anticipated up to 7-days per week.

Please allow for additional time when traveling to and from Emerald Isle. For real-time travel information, visit DriveNC.gov or follow NCDOT on social media.

Purple flags are flying for an abundance of sea lice/ jellyfish larve along our beach strand.

Clear/ white needles visually and cause mild irritation to the skin. Can become caught in fabrics of swimsuits.

Best treatment is to rinse with freshwater and change clothing immediately after leaving the beach. If severe symptoms occur, call 911. This is very rare.

Water conditions are currently Yellow Flag moderate risk.
Due to several jellyfish sting incidents the Purple Flag will also be flying.

This due in part to a light South wind. Purple flags will be up tomorrow as well

Dangerous currents may still occur during yellow flag conditions. Crews will begin changing flags within the hour.

Red Flags are going up for Emerald Isle. Water conditions are extremely hazardous! Crews will begin shortly with changing of the flags along the beach strand.

Local assessment along with a weather system off the coast has created rough surf and unpredictable currents.

Be careful on your evening stroll down the beach...This is about 6 houses East of Sound of the Sea.

There is a town ordinance against leaving a hole like this on the beach. Please think of pedestrians and emergency and non emergency vehicles that have to travel the beach. Folks can fall into the hole and be injured. Vehicles can be badly damaged if they run in a hole like this. Not to mention injuring the driver.
Do the right thing and fill in any hole you dig before leaving the beach.

8/5/2020, Moderate hazard water conditions have been forecast for Emerald Isle. A local assessment shows conditions are improving. Yellow flags will be up today across Emerald Isle. RIP currents still remain under yellow flag conditions, it is never 100% safe in the ocean!

SW winds around 10 MPH and surf height forecast 2-3'.

Flags will begin changing after 0830. Never swim alone and ask a lifeguard if you are unsure!

8/4/2020, High Hazard water conditions Red Flag still remain. Ocean Rescue Lifeguards are out surveying the beach strand, we do have flag poles down along the beach strand and will be working to get those flags out and flying within the next few hours!

07/30/2020, Red flags are being raised along the Emerald Isle beach strand! A strong longshore current, increased winds, and wave action have been noticed along the beach strand!

Red Flags indicate high hazard water conditions and it is not recommended to enter the water!

07/29/2020, Yellow flags indicating moderately hazardous water conditions will be up for Emerald Isle today.

Surf Height is 2-3' and SW winds 10 to 15 mph.

Looking ahead...the beach strand will begin to see long period swell from distant Potential Tropical Cyclone arrive Friday and peak over the weekend. This will likely lead to a higher threat of dangerous rip currents as well as rough surf.

Be safe and educate yourself and family members regarding beach and water safety!

7/27/20, 3:00pm, strong winds along with tide change have created hazardous conditions along Emerald Isle's beach strand. Red flags are being raised! Ocean Lifeguards are in the process of changing out the flags along the beach strand as Fire Department personnel change flags around the town.
Red flags indicate a high hazard risk to those which enter the water. Please stay out of the water!

July 21, 2020- Yellow flags for Emerald. NWS currently has forecast a moderate RIP current along our beach strand. SW winds at 15mph, Surf Height 2 to 3'.

RIP currents still occur during yellow flags. During yellow flag days the RIP currents are less frequent and aren't as fast moving.

Remember to never swim alone and always speak with a lifeguard about daily conditions!

Red Flags are going up along Emerald Isle, conditions are reaching high hazard. Crews are in the process of changing out the flags. Please use extreme caution if you decide to venture into the water!

7/15/20, Moderate Risk of RIP currents for Emerald Isle today, Yellow flags will be flying. Yellow flag conditions indicate that RIP current frequency and RIP current strength are moderate.

Surf height is around 2' high with E winds at 5 to 10 MPH.

Ocean Rescue Lifeguards will be patrolling from 10 am to 5:30 pm.
