Hello J-Sei community members! Go For Broke’s event “Restoring America’s Promise: The Fight for Justice” is today (Saturday, 10/24) from 1:00pm-3:00pm, at J-Sei both person and via Zoom*. *Please note that you must have been pre-registered by Monday, 10/19 to view this event, both in person and online.* It also features guest speaker Dr. Mitchell T. Maki, president & CEO of Go For Broke National Education Center.

Hi J-Sei community! Our next featured artists are Chiyeko’s Tezukuri (by Chiyeko Klarman), Old River Design Co., and Koko Baker’s Scarves (by Koko Baker). J-Sei’s very own instructor Chieyko Klarman will be selling “Tezukuri (手作り)”, or Japanese inspired handmade things. It includes wares such as table runners, potholders, bags, pouches, jewelry, hand built ceramic vases and bowls, and other decorative objects. Old River Design Co. is a San Francisco-based maker and fabric shop offering Japanese quilting cottons, sashiko kits, and handmade bags/ key fob wristlets, as well as sashiko kits. Koko Baker is another returning local artist who creates beautiful handmade scarves, weaving with materials like silk, wool, tencel and cotton.

Hi J-Sei friends and family! J-Sei is excited to announce the start of our new program “Toasty Tuesday Crafts” at J-Sei. This recurring activity includes a hot meal (just like our Meals on Wheels program) and additional time to bond with fellow community members through d.i.y arts and crafts. Crafts will change week to week, so you never know what you might do. The program will be: Tuesday, November 03rd, Tuesday, November 17th, Tuesday, December 01st, and Tuesday, December 15th. All dates will take place from 11:30am-1:00pm in person at J-Sei.

Hi J-Sei community! Our next featured artists are Visual Harmony Designs by Carrie Yoshida, Hidden Gems by Chiharu Nakagawa, and Kayoko Designs, by Kayoko Tachibana. Visual Harmony Designs has original and customized Cyanotype greeting cards, journals, holiday cards, post-it note holders, nightlights, book markers, framed artwork, desk calendars, earrings, and Washi pens. Hidden Gems features ​​a variety of hand crafted jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings inspired by Japanese art. Kayoko Tachibana is a local artist who makes original handcrafted jewelry made with Japanese rice paper and metal.

Hey J-Sei friends and family! Illuminate PLACE and A Place of Her Own's Closing celebration & Potluck is TODAY (Sunday, 10/18) from 12:00pm-3:00pm at J-Sei.

After more than two months together, 2026 Illuminate PLACE is coming to a close. Please join the artists, friends, and families for a final afternoon together. Bring a favorite potluck dish to share, spend time with the art and the artists.

You are invited to heal these tough times with a community of nurturing human beings. Help us celebrate this extraordinary community. And if you’re able, stay after 3 pm and help us restore J-Sei’s beautiful space as the artwork goes home with the artists.

Hi J-Sei friends and family! In addition to our many events we hold every month, there are also ongoing classes and workshops. One of our newest additions is our Hanafuda Club, which teaches the basics of Hanafuda with KOKOI rule (a popular, two person player game forming combinations ( yaku) and trying to gain more points than the opponents). It is a recurring class that has been going on weekly, every Monday since June from 10:00am-11:30am at J-Sei.
If you haven't had a chance to join us yet, please stop by. No RSVP is necessary, and beginners are always welcome.

We are also sharing instructor Sango Harumi’s incredible hand he won recently for 304 points. He managed to collect Sanko (3 Brights), Inoshikacho+2 animals, 6 Scrolls, and 14 Kasu cards after calling Koi-Koi four times. See photos attached for more info.

*Please note that there will be no class on Monday, October 12th in observance of Columbus Day.*

Hello J-Sei community members! Lots of exciting events are going on in October, and we hope you are filling out the month quickly. Save room for one more event this month. J-Sei is having a presentation on the poignant history of the Japanese American World War II experience called “Restoring America’s Promise: The Fight for Justice”. Featuring nationally recognized scholar Dr. Mitch Maki, it will feature historical facts paired with community anecdotes and audience perspectives, Dr. Maki fosters dynamic dialogue, connecting the Japanese American soldiers’ legacy to the enduring strength of democracy.

This *FREE* event will take place on Saturday, October 24th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at J-Sei in person and via Zoom. Register by *October 19* (6 days from now) at bit.ly/americaspromisejsei.

Hi J-Sei community! Our annual Artisan Faire is just around the corner. We know December feels far away right now, but it will be upon us before we know it. As part of our promotion for our festival we are highlighting some of the many artists/vendors’ work every week from now until the festival. To kick things off, we are starting with three of our featured artists. Local artist Barbara Morita of MoritaArts will have special hand-made Japanese-American crafts, including origami and ribbon fish ornaments, washi paper desk organizers, table runners and more. Local artist Dona Marie Turner of Crooked Flower Ceramics will have some colorful hand built low-fire ceramic pieces (minis, teapots, vases, cups, bowls and hanging garden balls). Our final featured artist of the week is a recurring favorite, Eastwind Books of Berkeley. They sell a variety of Japanese and J/A literature. More on Eastwind's exact merchandise is coming in a future post, so stay tuned!
