In a bonus May episode of Hibiku Kotoba, food writer and journalist Soleil Ho joins Kathleen. Coming to the Bay Area in 2019, Soleil was the restaurant and food critic of SF Chronicle during the pandemic and is a co-founder of the worker-owned independent news outlet, Coyote Media Collective. They share their story on how they became a food writer after working in the restaurant industry for a decade, on what it's like writing a cookbook (plus a great snippet of what kind of cookbook Soleil would like to write), and why independent journalism is and always will be important.

You can find Soleil's work at soleilho.com and at coyotemedia.org. They can also be found on Instagram and Bluesky at .

Listen and follow Hibiku Kotoba on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and J-Sei's YouTube channel.

Hello J-Sei community members. We have raised over $125,000 for our Give In May 2026 campaign in just 3 weeks!

To every single person who donated, shared our posts, and championed our mission this month—THANK YOU! We are so grateful to have a community that shows up for our fellow Japanese seniors and their surrounding communities, especially during this time.

There is still exactly 1 week left before the campaign closes on Sunday, *May 31st*. Every dollar raised in these final 7 days will go directly toward J-Sei’s many services including healthy, home-delivered Japanese meals, in-person communal lunches, food pantry services, wellness and cultural programs (both in-person and online), family caregiver support, caregiver registry, case management, friendly visitor services, and other programs/services that continue to bring joy, creativity and purpose to seniors across the East Bay.

Let's make our final week the best one yet! ✨

Hello J-Sei friends and family! J-Sei is excited to announce the opening of our brand new traveling exhibit “America’s Last Concentration Camp: Crystal City”, open NOW through July 22nd, 2026. Curated by Crystal City Pilgrimage Committee, this national traveling exhibit is based on their permanent exhibit at the My Story Museum in Crystal City, Texas (open since October 2025).

The "America’s Last WWII Concentration Camp" exhibit at the My Story Museum in Crystal City, Texas, preserves the history of the largest family internment camp for Japanese, German, and Italian detainees during World War II. The museum highlights the stories of thousands held from 1942–1948, featuring 3-D models, photographs, and artifacts. This national traveling exhibit will also feature additional interpretive panels that depict stories of the individual families who were incarcerated at Crystal City. To learn more about the exhibit and the history of Crystal City Family Internment Camp, visit our website: https://j-sei.org/americas-last-concentration-camp-crystal-city/.

Also, don’t forget to register for our opening night program *this Saturday* (05/23) from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Sign up through the link on our website, or by scanning the Q.R. code in the attached Opening Night Program poster. Save the date and spread the word!
