Update Regarding Natural Gas Odor

Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities continues to address an equipment malfunction that is causing a higher-than-normal concentration of odorant to be added to the natural gas system.

Natural gas is naturally odorless, so a non-hazardous odorant is added to the gas stream to give it the distinctive smell commonly associated with natural gas. This allows leaks to be detected quickly and safely. Because of the higher concentration of odorant, some customers may notice a stronger “gas” smell than usual.

This is an issue with the new automated equipment and is not the result of operator error. EMU has remained in continual contact with the equipment company, and a company representative is on site today to help resolve the issue.

If you suspect or detect a gas leak, please call Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities office at 712-852-2550 immediately for assistance. After business hours (7:30am-4:00pm) call the emergency/on-call number: 712-480-2552. In an emergency, do not turn light or appliances on or off, leave the area immediately, and call 911 from a safe location.
