The ETCOG Public Safety department recognizes Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, honoring 9-1-1 operators, dispatchers and other communications specialists for providing East Texans assistance when they need it most. As stated by the Governor, these are the "unseen first responders" and their dedicated service is invaluable.

Staff are celebrating the 150 telecommunicators in our service area by distributing treats to East Texas dispatch offices.

Thank you for your amazing service!

The Rains County Sheriff's Office has had multiple reports of people passing school buses as they load or unload students. It is a crime to pass a school bus when the lights are flashing, the stop sign is out and/or children are loading or unloading. The first offense is a $500.00 ticket. If a citizen sees some one committing this offense please call us at 903-473-3153 or call 911. As a citizen you may follow the offender at a safe distance until an officer arrives on scene. Do not attempt to contact the driver by honking or flashing your lights and do not try to impede them from driving away. If you can safely get the vehicle's license plate number advise dispatch of that information when you call. The safety of of our children is a huge priority and we will do our best to stop this offense from occurring.

The Rains County Sheriff's Office spends an inordinate amount of time trying to locate the owners every time cows, horses or donkeys get loose. Dispatch calls every possible livestock owner to prevent accidents on the roads and ensure that the animals are returned to their proper owner.
We would appreciate if those who own livestock would take the time to call us at 903-473-3153 and give us your contact info as well as the type, color and markings of the livestock you own. In addition, if you have neighbors who own livestock, you could help us by notifying them to contact us or even giving us their information yourself, it would make our roads and highways safer and cut down on a lot of loss. We can be reached at 903-473-3153 twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Thank you.

Rains County Emergency Management

Rains County Emergency Management

A strong storm system will impact the region Thursday and Friday with strong, gusty winds and precipitation chances.

Strong winds: The strongest winds will occur between midday Thursday and midday Friday. Sustained speeds will exceed 30 mph at times, with gusts approaching 50 mph.

ANY BURNING IN THIS TYPE OF WIND IS ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE, NO CONTROL BURNS ARE ALLOWED IN THIS TYPE OF WIND.

Severe storms:
Because of the speed of the system, there will only be a brief window for strong thunderstorms before colder air invades. The greater potential for severe weather will be south and east of the region.

Winter weather:
From Thursday evening through Friday morning, snow or a rain/snow mix may occur across portions of North and Central Texas. For now, areas west of I-35 have the greatest potential for snow. If a heavy snow band develops, there may be travel impacts due to the snow accumulating faster than it can melt.
