EPD Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash

On September 5, 2026, at approximately 3:33 a.m., the Emporia Police Department responded to the intersection of South Main Street and Battery Avenue for a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.

The Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad and Greensville Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene and provided emergency
assistance.

The pedestrian has been identified as Keon Danion Kemp, 42, of Emporia. Mr. Kemp was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.

The incident remains under active investigation. The Virginia State Police is assisting the Emporia Police Department with crash reconstruction, and Sergeant Mark Howell is conducting the investigation on behalf of the Emporia Police Department.

At this time, no additional information regarding the circumstances of the crash is being released while the investigation remains ongoing.

The Emporia Police Department extends its condolences to Mr. Kemp’s family and all those affected by this tragic incident.

🚨 Well… hello there. 👋

123 MPH in a 70 MPH zone.

An officer recently cited a driver after radar indicated a speed of 123 MPH - 53 MPH over the posted limit.

We enjoy a good joke about Emporia’s reputation as much as anyone, but speeds like this are no joke. At 123 MPH, there is very little room for error, and the consequences can be devastating for everyone sharing the highway.

The driver was charged with Reckless Driving. As with any charge, the individual is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Please slow down, we’d much rather wave as you pass through Emporia than meet you on the shoulder. 👮‍♂️

🚔☀️ EPD SUMMER YOUTH DAY CAMP IS UNDERWAY! ☀️🚔

What a great start to the day! Our campers are getting an up-close look at what we do here at the Emporia Police Department, meeting our officers, checking out police vehicles and equipment, learning about public safety, and having plenty of fun along the way.

Days like today are about more than police work. They’re about building relationships, creating positive experiences, and showing our young people that their police department is here for them.

But they better pay attention to their training… 👀

Later today, our campers will receive a report of a group of ZOMBIES in the area! They’ll have to put everything they’ve learned to the test, work together as a team, and see if they have what it takes to handle the call! 🚨🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️

Something tells us things are about to get interesting around EPD! 😂
