Today, ranking officers attended the police memorial service at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Each year, law enforcement officials and dignitaries gather to honor the officers within Bergen County who paid the ultimate sacrifice while in service to their communities. This year, we were honored to have Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Steve Witte, grandson of the late ECPD Chief Fred H Witte, join Chief Henkelman, Lieutenant Tracy and Lieutenant Totten at the memorial. A wreath was presented memory of Fred H. Witte who died in the line of duty in 1977. Please take a moment to remember all of these brave law enforcement officers and the friends and family members they left behind.

This weekend, the ECPD concluded another successful season of the Fred H. Witte Baseball Clinic! Officers and children alike enjoyed the experience, and we are already looking forward to the 2027 season. The ECPD would like to thank all of the participants, as well as the officers who volunteered their time -- especially the program directors, Lt. Nick Drimones and PO Bryce Jacob!

April is Autism Awareness Month. The Englewood Cliffs Police Department has implemented policy and trains all officers, in an effort to foster acceptance and understanding of those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In addition, we continue to participate in the “Blue Envelope Program.” Residents affected by ASD can come to Police Headquarters and receive a blue envelope with instructions for both the driver of a motor vehicle and for police officers who may come in contact with them. With clearly printed instructions and explanations, the goal of the Blue Envelope Program is to facilitate a safe interaction between law enforcement and drivers with ASD.
