Two weeks ago 3 of Maugo Village's 6 shambas were planted. Last week, 5. The sixth was still waiting on the rotavator.

That's the tiller that breaks the ground before anyone can transplant. It's rice season across the whole area, so one machine serves every group that needs it, and the sixth sub-group's turn kept getting pushed back.

It reached them this week. "Planting will end by Saturday," Salome says.

Six acres, six sub-groups, every acre transplanted by hand.

The shambas planted first are already on the water cycle, drained dry to toughen the roots and then flooded again. The sixth starts that soon.

She agreed to answer 244 questions.

That's what a midline survey is from the other chair. 105 on health, 87 on her life in the village, 52 on money. Out loud, one at a time, to an enumerator with a phone.

She answered the same questionnaires in 2024, before the CHEC started. That's the before picture.

GHC did this again in over 220 households across Maugo and Nyamokenye villages, hers included, 22 months after both CHECs began. That's the after picture.

This shamba is bone dry, and that's exactly the plan.

GHC's Project Officer, Salome, sent this from the field: once a shamba's planted, the water gets drained out on purpose, dry enough to strengthen the rice roots, before it gets flooded back in. This is that in-between stage.

5 of Maugo's 6 shambas are at this point now, up from 3 last week. The 6th is still waiting on the rotavator.

Soklo's cassava field is ash from edge to edge.

The community finished burning it this week, clearing brush and old growth ahead of planting. It's been over two months since the last rainfall. The field's ready. The sky isn't.

So they wait. The moment the rain breaks, planting starts.

Half the shambas are planted. Half are waiting on a machine.

At this week's Maugo CHEC meeting, each of the six sub-groups reported on its own shamba: 3 of the 6 rice fields are planted, and the crews are already cycling the water on those, draining each paddy dry to strengthen the roots, then flooding it again. The other 3 are seeded and ready to go, but stuck behind the Rotavator, the machine that tills the field before anyone can transplant.

It's rice season across the whole area, not just Maugo, so demand for the machine outpaces supply. It's booked for Wednesday and Thursday, and those 3 groups plant the moment it shows up.
Nobody skipped their turn. They rescheduled around a shared machine and kept meeting about it.

The supers are on.
Last night, GHC's Apiary Manager, Mark Orondo, was in Nyamokenye helping the CHEC add honey supers, the removable boxes where the actual honey builds, to the 16 hives that moved into the apiary a week ago. Bees fill the super without the beekeeper ever touching the brood box below. That's the whole design: harvest the honey, leave the colony alone.

16 of the group's 80 hives are working now. The rest come online the same way, in batches.

This Maugo women's group just finished planting their acre of rice, entirely by hand.

They're catching their breath in this photo, the moment the work was done for the day. It's one of six acres across six sub-groups running this program in Maugo, the same structure since the rice launch back in June.

This is transplanting day in Maugo.

Late last week, the women's group moved rice seedlings from the nursery bed into the paddy, row by row, on foot, in the mud. It's the step between weeks of ground prep and the months of tending before harvest.

"People think debt is debt."

That's what Quinter Obunga, GHC's Soklo Village Project Officer, noticed hosting a radio session on Mfangano Island this week — until the topic turned to good debt versus bad debt, and something clicked.

"After the show they now understand the difference," she says.

No village visit, no in-person training. Just a radio show, reaching tens of thousands of people CHECs haven't gotten to yet.

Sixteen hives moved into the new apiary in Nyamokenye last night — all of them already colonized.

Five women beekeepers suited up to get them in place. "The women are very active and hardworking," GHC's Mark Orondo says. The group's giving the colonies one week to settle before the honey supers go on.

This CHEC keeps stacking income streams: quilts on the machines, now bees in the hills.
