Last week was the SkillsUSA National Leadership + Skills Conference in Atlanta, GA, with nearly 7,000 students competing in their respective fields and 19,000 attendees. After continuously advancing starting at the local competitions this past winter, we had 2 GCA students earn a spot to compete at the national level against the best of the best from all 50 states, including students from Puerto Rico.

Both of our students made top 10 in the country! Help us congratulate the following students:

Brook Russell (Northmont, Sr./Grad) 7th place in Extemporaneous Speaking. She also pulled double duty as a lead voting delegate in officer elections for the state of Ohio!

Olivia Wollenhaupt (West Carrollton, Sr./Grad) 9th place in Advertising Design.

We are so incredibly proud of these two ladies for their hard work and dedication. It is not an easy path to get to this level. They couldn’t have represented GCA, MVCTC, and the state of Ohio any better. We can’t wait to see what they do next at the collegiate level! 🎉🏅♥️🤍💙⭐️

One of the most notable scholarships from Xavier includes the Mother McAuley Art Scholarship. For this award, Olivia had to submit her portfolio online. She was one of only two students that received the final $24,000 scholarship, adding to her official total of $178,000 to attend Xavier University.

A handful of Olivia's portfolio projects are included in this post. If you want to check out her work in person and see the other incredible work from the Class of 2026, the 2026 Portfolio Show will take place at MVCTC this Friday from 3–5pm! We hope to see you there.

The Graphic Commercial Art juniors recently finished their Animal projects. Students were tasked with choosing and editing their reference photo and completing the project in either scratchboard or pen and ink. Both are very unforgiving mediums, so the students took a significant amount of time competing this one.

Here are a few of our favorites from this year!

The Graphic Commercial Art juniors traveled to The Modern College of Design today where they learned about program offerings and pathways, toured campus, and participated in a group activity - brainstorming and pitching their branding idea for a randomly assigned company. They also got to explore the marketing and design involved in the wild at Scene75 riding rides and playing games. Fun was had by all - now on to 4th quarter and the end of junior year! 💙
