Like many pilots, Ric Shotwell caught the aviation bug early—flying in a homebuilt airplane when he was around 10 years old. That's when he knew. After serving in the Army with the 82nd Airborne and a brief career flying in the Gulf of Mexico, he made the move to air medical and has been saving lives ever since. He originally flew TarHeel 1 for UNC Carolina Air Care before moving to Connecticut to fly for LIFE STAR out of Hartford Hospital, where he's been since 1995. "Honestly, EMS was an opportunity to continue to fly," said Shotwell. "When I got into it, I found that I liked helping people who needed help." His advice to new pilots? Take the training seriously. Study accidents and incidents to learn from them. Know that you will make mistakes, admit them and choose not to make them again. Over the last four decades, Ric has played a crucial role in saving so many lives. We thank him for 40 years of commitment and dedication to the Air Methods mission. 🚁💙
