Today marks 25 years since a day that will forever remain in the hearts and minds of our nation.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 innocent lives were taken in acts of terrorism that forever changed our country.

We remember those who went to work that morning and never returned home. We remember the passengers and crews aboard the four flights. We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and countless others who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape.

We remember the courage of ordinary Americans who, in the face of unimaginable tragedy, stepped forward to help complete strangers. We also remember the first responders and recovery workers who carried the physical and emotional effects of that day for years afterward.

Twenty-five years have passed, but we have not forgotten. And remembering must mean more than words.

Today, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department challenges our community to honor the lives lost by carrying forward the spirit our nation showed in the days that followed September 11th.

Check on a neighbor. Thank a first responder. Help someone in need. Fly our flag proudly. Teach our children why this day matters. Choose kindness over division, service over self, and unity over differences.

September 11th reminded us that in our darkest hours, we are strongest when we stand together. That responsibility belongs to every one of us.

Let us be the kind of community that looks out for one another, not just today, but every day.

Remember the fallen. Honor the heroes. Serve your neighbor. Stand together.

We will never forget.

Do you have property being held by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department that was:

- Found
- Held for safekeeping
- Seized or collected as evidence

If you can legally possess the property, it is no longer needed for a pending criminal case, and there is no court order preventing its release, your property may be eligible to be returned.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department now offers an online request form to inquire about your property and request a Property Release Appointment.

Once your request is received, Sheriff’s Department personnel will review the property and determine whether it is eligible for release. If the property can be released, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment.

Please do not arrive at the Sheriff’s Department to retrieve property until an appointment has been confirmed.

A valid government-issued photo ID may be required when retrieving property. Additional documentation may also be required depending on the type of property being released.

Indiana Law:

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department handles the retention and disposition of property held as evidence in accordance with Indiana Code § 35-33-5-5.

Under Indiana law, property seized as the result of an arrest, search warrant, or warrantless search is generally held securely by law enforcement under the authority of the court while it is needed for a case. Following final disposition, property that may be lawfully possessed is generally returned to its rightful owner, if known.
