With summer heading our way soon, we wanted to remind everyone of the laws regarding e-bikes and e-motorcycles. We realize that these bikes are a great way to explore town and enjoy the weather, but we want to make sure that everyone is able to enjoy this time as safely as possible.

According to Washington State law, here are the differences between E-bikes and E-motorcycles:
• E-Bikes are bicycles have pedals, but are able to be assisted by a motor as well. Some e-bikes only provide electric assistance when the rider is pedaling. Others can propel the e-bike using electric power alone. Legal e-bikes have a maximum speed of 20 mph (Class 1 and 2) or 28 mph (Class 3). An e-bike motor will never exceed 750 watts of power.
• Electric Motorcycles are powered solely by an electric motor and don’t have moving pedals. They have foot pegs, other brackets or supports. Without moving pedals capable of propelling, the cycle is classified as a motorcycle.

Washington State law defines E-motorcycles as motor vehicles and are subject to age restrictions and licensing and registration requirements. They are also limited to street use.

What Every E-Motorcycle Rider Must Know:
• It is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to operate an electric motorcycle.
• Operators must hold a valid driver’s license WITH motorcycle endorsement.
• E-motorcycles must be registered with the Department of Licensing (DOL) and display a license plate, similar to gas-powered motorcycles.
• E-motorcycles must be insured.
• E-motorcycles are subject to the same equipment standards as traditional motorcycles. They must have functioning brakes, headlights, taillights, reflectors and mirrors.
• Riders are required to wear a motorcycle-rated helmet when operating on public roads (see RCW 46.37.530).
• E-motorcycles must follow all applicable motor vehicle laws. It is illegal to operate them on sidewalks, paths, bike lanes or multi-use trails anywhere in Washington. They are permitted only on roadways, just like any other motorcycle.
Parents or Guardians who allow a minor without a license and motorcycle endorsement to ride an E-Motorcycle on public roads would be violating RCW 46.20.024. This offense is a criminal misdemeanor charge. Whether you are an operator or a parent or guardian of an operator, please ensure you know the laws so that we can avoid unnecessary injury.

SOCIAL MEDIA MISINFORMATION CORRECTION

We have been made aware of a continuing concern of residential armed robberies floating around on social media. We have investigated these claims as they were reported and determined them to be false. There are characteristics related to the reporting party on these incidents that is not available for public dissemination, but there is no truth to the claims of any armed robbers committing crimes in Enumclaw.

While there are many new apps and technologies that exist to provide 911 call information, we would like to caution that these do not provide the full story. These apps and technologies do not include any investigatory information or provide any follow-up of the initial 911 call. When there are true safety concerns to the residents of Enumclaw, we will continue to utilize this page along with the city page to inform the public of such threats.

Enumclaw has consistently been considered one of the safest cities in Washington State, and every year, we compile and post our yearly crime statistics, available for viewing on the Enumclaw city website.
