Last week we had the privilege to stop by and show our appreciation for our nurses during Nurse Appreciation Week! Your Enumclaw Fire Department and members from our neighbors Mountain View Fire and Rescue were able to spend a few moments to let our nurses know they are appreciated.

At 3:21 this morning, Enumclaw Fire crews were dispatched to a power pole on fire at the 40300 block of Hwy 169 (264th Ave SE). Enroute, the responding unit added Puget Sound Energy to the call. When fire crews arrived on scene, they found a power pole that was on fire and significantly compromised. Highway 169 was immediately shut down at the cross streets-416th St and 400th St, due to the danger. Shortly after traffic was rerouted, in a dramatic explosion of fire and electricity, the transformer blew, causing the weakened power pole to fail making that immediate area extremely dangerous!

PSE crews arrived, ensured the power to the area was secured so the fire could be extinguished. The scene has been stabilized but PSE crews will be working throughout the day.

If your commute takes you down Hwy 169 between 416th St and 400th St (Krain Corner), you will be detoured or experience delays for the majority of the day as PSE works to fix the problem.

Tonight we were called to a different kind of rescue. A horse named Willow found herself in critical position after a bridge collapsed, plunging her into the muddy creek below. When Willow fell, her body landed, wedged between the bank and a steel beam, from the collapsed bridge, and she was having a very difficult time breathing. The situation was dire for Willow. Time wasn’t on our side and she didn’t have long. Everyone jumped in to help. The owner’s veterinarian arrived and was able to help stabilize Willow as we set up to help rescue her. Animal rescue volunteers from set up a rope and harness system and we were able to shift Willow into a better position to breathe. Hurting and in shock, Willow was running out of time. With a little more encouragement, she had enough spirit left to give it one final, huge effort and together we pulled her up and over the embankment! After a tense 15 minutes, Willow was able to get to her feet. Rescuers and her veterinarian treated her and slowly moved her to her warm stall. They are optimistic for a full recovery.

Enumclaw Fire is proud to announce and congratulate Fire Chief Ben Hayman on his appointment as our permanent Fire Chief. Chief Hayman previously served as Deputy Chief and was appointed as Interim Chief earlier this year. At last month’s Board of Fire Commissioners meeting, he was unanimously approved as Fire Chief. Please join us in congratulating Chief Hayman on his well deserved appointment.

Last night, during our annual Santa Run event, while out collecting donations with Santa, our firefighter elves came across a strong smell of smoke. They paused to investigate the area and found the source to be a nearby home on fire. Quickly switching gears, they requested a response through dispatch for a “working fire” and went straight to work. Additional crews immediately arrived, made entry to the home and were able to extinguish the fire. No one was home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! AND, to top it off, the remaining Santa Run crew of citizen volunteers, minus the fire trucks, firefighters and police, continued on to finish the route so all the children, out waiting for Santa, in the pouring rain, wouldn’t be disappointed!! Way to show amazing teamwork, crews!!!

Santa Run-ORANGE NIGHT!
Santa and the firefighter elves will be in the ORANGE section of Enumclaw from 6pm-9pm! Firefighter elves will be handing out Christmas cheer and candy canes and collecting new, unwrapped toy and nonperishable food donations! Donations will be distributed locally through Plateau Kids Network's Holiday Helping Hands and Plateau Outreach Ministries.

***Due to the expected heavy rain/weather forecast, if you have a donation to give the firefighters, PLEASE BAG YOUR DONATIONS in closed plastic bags to help protect them.
