How it started

A friend and I were sharing how overwhelming it can feel to have so many toys for our children. As we talked, I said, “What we need is a toy library.” Families can check out toys and have them for a month and then return them. It seemed like a brilliant idea and I was excited about it, but I didn’t have any plans of creating one. That is until, my friend Sharon approached me and asked about my idea of a toy library. “Let’s do it!” she exclaimed.

As I researched, toy libraries exist in many countries around the world, but only a few in the United States. I reached out to a toy library in Minnesota, Minneapolis Toy Library, and they answered so many questions for us as we started. They have been very helpful for us. We are so thankful for the many donations we have received over the past year. Because of those donations, we are able to have the Toy Library.

Our goal with the toy library is to reduce waste, teach responsibility to children, create community, and to inspire children’s imagination. Children have the opportunity to come interact with other children, play with new (new to them) toys, and then take them home. Parents can guide their children as they play and choose which toy they want to take home. They can also connect with the other parents who come.
