The members of the Ephrata Police Department extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Les Martzall following his passing.

Les dedicated countless years to the Ephrata Community, and his commitment, compassion, and service to others will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Les’ loved ones and all those at the Ephrata Community Ambulance Association during this difficult time.

The Ephrata Community Ambulance Association announces, with deep sadness, the passing of life member and Emergency Medical Technician, Leslie “Les” Martzall.

Les began his service with Ephrata Ambulance in January 1978 and dedicated decades of his life to the organization and the community. He served as President from 1981 to 1997, again from 2004 to 2012, and most recently from 2018 to 2025. In addition, he held the role of Treasurer from 2002 to 2003 and from 2014 to 2017. At the time of his passing, he continued to serve in the role of President Emeritus. In addition to his service with Ephrata Ambulance, Les also volunteered his time with multiple other fire and EMS agencies throughout the county.

Throughout his years of service, Les made lasting contributions to EMS in Ephrata. He was a certified First Aid and CPR instructor, served on numerous ambulance committees, and played a key role in the purchase and renovation of the former gas station that now serves as the current Ephrata Ambulance station. He was also instrumental in the development and launch of the Ephrata Ambulance paratransit service in 1997.

Les’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to helping others have left an enduring impact on the organization and the community he served so faithfully. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working with him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

SRO Hirneisen achieves prestigious recognition-
On April 29, 2026, School Resource Officer (SRO) John Hirneisen was recognized by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) for attaining the achievement of National School Resource Officer Practitioner. More than a just title, this accomplishment represents SRO Hirneisen’s initiative and dedication to learning and excellence. This recognition entails at least 224 hours of training related to school safety, attendance of the NASRO School Safety Conference, along with at least three years of experience as a School Resource Officer. According to Chief Christopher McKim, “Officer Hirneisen continues to demonstrate what outstanding school resource officers bring to a community — leadership, compassion, professionalism, and a commitment to students. I am immensely proud of Officer Hirneisen for earning the National SRO Practitioner designation and I thank him for his continued service.” Please join the Ephrata Police Department in congratulating SRO Hirneisen!
