GECAC Greater Erie Community Action Committee

GECAC Greater Erie Community Action Committee Eliminating Poverty through Empowerment, Education, and Community Partnerships. But the face of poverty is changing. It’s one impossible choice after another.

The Greater Erie Community Action Committee, better known as GECAC, is Erie County’s Community Action agency. Our nonprofit 501(c)3 organization was created to change people’s lives, improve our community and make it a better place to live. Whether you are working at minimum wage, a senior living on a fixed income, or a wage earner suddenly out of work, Community Action is here to help you meet yo

ur emergency needs and start you on the road to self-sufficiency. One of more than 1,100 community action agencies nationwide, GECAC is bound by the Promise of Community Action:

Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other as they move from poverty to self-sufficiency. The diversity of our services provides the opportunity to reach the needs of the total family. GECAC operates Erie County’s Area Agency on Aging, GECAC Adult Learning Center, Older Adult Protective Services, and Summer JAM, as well as programs in Upward Bound, Senior Centers, Job Training, Senior Corp Volunteer Program, Housing and Utility Assistance, and Meals on Wheels. GECAC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed by nearly 150 employees charged with the delivery of services. GECAC is supported through contributions from individuals, corporations and organizations as well as grants from local, state and federal sources. General Information
Since 1965, GECAC has been quietly feeding our communities, caring for our elderly, teaching our children, preventing homelessness and educating and counseling adults. We were once a nation that had the largest middle class in history, but now we are becoming a nation that is deeply divided between the haves and have-nots. Today, competition for even the lowest-paying jobs has created a situation in which millions of Americans are working as hard as they can and yet they still cannot get ahead. Feed their children or pay the rent. GECAC invests in individuals and their families who are striving to develop their skills. We have established programs that provide the resources needed to break the cycle of poverty, be self-sufficient and achieve financial independence. Poverty is a community issue that calls for community solutions and community action. As we celebrate 50 years of helping people and changing lives, we call on you to Take Action.

Today, GECAC joins communities across the nation in recognizing Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and hope.

Juneteenth reminds us that the journey toward opportunity, equity, and justice requires ongoing commitment from all of us. As a Community Action Agency, GECAC is dedicated to empowering individuals and families, reducing barriers to success, and helping create a stronger, more inclusive Erie County for everyone.

We honor the significance of this day and the generations who have worked to advance freedom and opportunity for all.

Happy Juneteenth!

At GECAC, this belief guides everything we do.

For many individuals and families, success is not about a lack of determination. It's about overcoming obstacles that stand in the way of opportunity. Whether it's helping a senior access services, connecting someone to job training, assisting a family with utility support, or helping an adult earn a diploma, removing barriers creates new possibilities.

When barriers come down, people can move forward. They can pursue education, find employment, maintain stable housing, and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

At GECAC, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

During Pride Month, we celebrate the diversity that makes our community stronger and reaffirm our commitment to serving all people with dignity, respect, and compassion.

This month, GECAC is joining communities across the country to raise awareness and encourage action. We invite you to wear purple on June 15th to show your support for older adults and your commitment to preventing elder abuse.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect. Too often, it happens behind closed doors, leaving older adults feeling isolated and vulnerable.

In Erie County, we all have a role to play in protecting our older neighbors, friends, and family members. By staying connected, checking in on seniors, recognizing warning signs, and speaking up when something seems wrong, we can help prevent elder abuse before it happens.

Visit GECAC's Older Adult Protective Services webpage for more information on how to report abuse at https://www.gecac.org/work/aging/older-adult-protective-service
