GECAC Greater Erie Community Action Committee

GECAC Greater Erie Community Action Committee Eliminating Poverty through Empowerment, Education, and Community Partnerships. But the face of poverty is changing. It’s one impossible choice after another.

The Greater Erie Community Action Committee, better known as GECAC, is Erie County’s Community Action agency. Our nonprofit 501(c)3 organization was created to change people’s lives, improve our community and make it a better place to live. Whether you are working at minimum wage, a senior living on a fixed income, or a wage earner suddenly out of work, Community Action is here to help you meet yo

ur emergency needs and start you on the road to self-sufficiency. One of more than 1,100 community action agencies nationwide, GECAC is bound by the Promise of Community Action:

Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other as they move from poverty to self-sufficiency. The diversity of our services provides the opportunity to reach the needs of the total family. GECAC operates Erie County’s Area Agency on Aging, GECAC Adult Learning Center, Older Adult Protective Services, and Summer JAM, as well as programs in Upward Bound, Senior Centers, Job Training, Senior Corp Volunteer Program, Housing and Utility Assistance, and Meals on Wheels. GECAC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed by nearly 150 employees charged with the delivery of services. GECAC is supported through contributions from individuals, corporations and organizations as well as grants from local, state and federal sources. General Information
Since 1965, GECAC has been quietly feeding our communities, caring for our elderly, teaching our children, preventing homelessness and educating and counseling adults. We were once a nation that had the largest middle class in history, but now we are becoming a nation that is deeply divided between the haves and have-nots. Today, competition for even the lowest-paying jobs has created a situation in which millions of Americans are working as hard as they can and yet they still cannot get ahead. Feed their children or pay the rent. GECAC invests in individuals and their families who are striving to develop their skills. We have established programs that provide the resources needed to break the cycle of poverty, be self-sufficient and achieve financial independence. Poverty is a community issue that calls for community solutions and community action. As we celebrate 50 years of helping people and changing lives, we call on you to Take Action.

On Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and express our gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

From all of us at GECAC, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

May is Older Americans Month, and GECAC is proud to celebrate the older adults who strengthen our communities every day.

Throughout the month, our senior centers have recognized the contributions, wisdom, and experiences of the older adults we serve through special activities, social gatherings, wellness programs, and community connections.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support and celebrate the incredible seniors who inspire us with their resilience, kindness, and lifelong impact on Erie County.

The Union City Senior Center got in on the fun by hosting a mismatch day, and our members didn't disappoint! Seniors throughout Erie County gathered to celebrate during the Senor Meet Up at The Barracks in Girard. Our senior centers are the best place in Erie County for seniors over 60! join us: https://www.gecac.org/work/aging/senior-centers

We are excited to announce a new partnership between GECAC and the Northwestern School District through the Foster Grandparent Program.

Seniors who volunteer for the Classroom Foster Grandparents Program will now be able to mentor students in Northwestern Elementary and Springfield Elementary Schools.

This partnership will connect caring older adult volunteers with students who can benefit from additional encouragement, mentorship, and support in the classroom.

Together, we are creating meaningful relationships that strengthen our schools and community. We look forward to the positive impact this program will have on students, volunteers, and families throughout the district.

Be the first senior to volunteer! All Foster Grandparents receive a stipend of $4 per hour.

For more information about becoming a Foster Grandparent, please visit https://www.gecac.org/work/aging/foster-grandparents or contact Karen Hund, Director, at (814) 459-4581 Ext. 462.

This Mother’s Day, GECAC honors the strength, resilience, and love of mothers across Erie County.

Every day, mothers take on countless roles. They work hard to provide for their families, volunteer to help others, care for loved ones, and raise children with compassion, patience, and determination. Many have faced struggles most people never see, overcoming challenges while continuing to support those around them with strength and grace.

Their perseverance helps build stronger families and a stronger community for all of us.

To all mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures, thank you for the love and strength you share with the world. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at GECAC.
