* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents expected.

* WHERE...Atlantic Coastal Cape May, Coastal Atlantic and
Coastal Ocean.

* WHEN...From Monday morning through Monday evening.

* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away
from shore into deeper water.
Always obey posted Beach Flags. If you enter the surf zone,
always have a floatation device with you and swim near a
lifeguard if possible. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float and do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel
to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help.

Yesterday, June 17, 2026, the Lower Township Police Department and Chief Donald Vanaman, had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a true inspiration: Alex Mann!

Lower Township officially marks the 537th police department Alex has visited during his incredible 7.5-year journey across the country to support law enforcement and spread autism awareness. Since Alex frequently vacations right here in Cape May County, we were thrilled to show him how we operate!

Alex was first sworn-in as an honorary member of the Lower Township Police Department Family, followed by a formal signing of the oath. He was also furnished with a proclamation from Mayor Frank Sippel declaring April 2026 Autism Awareness Month.

Alex did not just come for a tour—he came to teach. He provided our team with an excellent PowerPoint training resource, highlighting important insights like understanding that autism is a neurological difference, not a mental health emergency. This training is invaluable for helping our officers safely identify and connect with individuals on the spectrum in our community. Alex also teaches at the Cape May County Police Academy.

Afterward, we showed him the full public safety experience! Alex toured our Public Safety Building, checking out:

• The Detective Bureau & Drone Program 🚁
• Cape May County Dispatch, OEM, & Communications Center
• Our partners at the Fire Bureau, Town Bank Fire Department, and AtlanticCare Rescue 🚒🚑

We wrapped up the day the best way we know how—with a great lunch at Little Italy! 🍕 Alex was given multiple shirts, challenge coins, and additional swag from each area he visited. This historical visit was coordinated, planned and executed by SFC Michael Perry, Support Operation’s Commander.

Alex, the work you are doing to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community is incredible. Thank you for your support, your advocacy, and for stopping by to make us department #537. Keep up the amazing work, and enjoy the rest of your vacation in Cape May County! 👋👮♂️✨
