Unicoi County EMS honors the voices on the other end of the call; the unseen heroes of every 911 call; the men and women who hold the system together! This week (and every week) Unicoi County EMS honors the members of the Unicoi County 911 Communications District!

Without the men and women who operate behind the scene, no 911 call for help would be answered - no response would be given - and lives would be lost!

We are so thankful for such an outstanding group of men and women!! Alora, without you and your crew, we would all be lost!! You and your team are the glue that holds us all together!!

Happy Telecommunications Week to the greatest team!!!

What does it actually cost to put one ambulance on the road? Most people see the ambulance arrive and never think about what it took to get it there. Here is what goes into a single, fully equipped unit that our paramedics rely on every day. A brand new, fully equipped ambulance costs $565,600. The vehicle itself is $345,000. The remaining $220,600 goes into the medical equipment and supplies required to make it a functioning emergency medical unit. Below is an image breakdown of what is inside, including some of the equipment that is vital for us to take care of our citizens.

The majority of this equipment was not on our ambulances 20 years ago. Today, it is required to meet current emergency medical standards and to give every patient in St. Francois County the level of care they deserve.

And that $565,600 is just the starting point. Every ambulance we put on the road carries ongoing costs for fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Our crews put significant miles on these units every single day, responding across 455 square miles that include rural roads and conditions that are hard on any vehicle, as well as the many miles spent transporting patients to specialty hospitals in St. Louis. That wear and tear is real, and responsible planning means preparing for it. These are not optional expenses. They are the cost of keeping a reliable ambulance available when you call 911.

That is why adding ambulances to improve coverage and reduce the number of times when no units are available is a significant, ongoing investment. Each new unit on the road represents more than half a million dollars in equipment alone, before accounting for the crews, fuel, training, and maintenance needed to keep it running around the clock.

The St. Francois County Ambulance Growth Proposition would make it possible to add the ambulances and crews our community needs to keep up with growing demand across our 455 square miles.

Faster Help. Better Care. Your Community.
