Escalon Police Chief Donald Stewart was killed in the line of duty on August 23, 1963 after being struck in the head with his nightstick.

Article – La Habra Star, August 26, 1963

“The Police chief of Escalon died early Sunday after a scuffle with a man he arrested. He was 59 year old Donald Stewart. Stewart suffered injuries Saturday night when he and Sergeant James Black received a call that Gene Bunton had been fighting with his family. The two went to the Bunton home where they encountered Bunton yielding a baseball bat. After wrestling away the bat, Bunton grabbed Stewart’s nightstick and hit him twice before he could be subdued. As they were driving toward San Joaquin County Jail in Stockton, Stewart suddenly slumped over the wheel. He was dead on arrival at the local hospital. Stewart had been police chief for 10 years.”

With the improved weather, we have noticed an increase in use of electric scooters and e-bikes which are blocking roadways, performing unsafe stunts, riding into oncoming traffic, impeding traffic, and in some cases, being disrespectful to motorists. We encourage all to use the roads and sidewalks in a safe and respectful manner. If not, we will issue citations for any unsafe activities.

The Escalon Police will share information regarding classifications of scooters/e-bikes that are permitted on streets, as well as reminders for children to wear helmets to ensure the safety of this community.
