Preserving Food? Don’t Forget About Lead!

Home canning and food preservation are great ways to enjoy your garden’s harvest—but it’s important to make sure the equipment you use is safe for food.

Some older or imported cookware, ceramics, and food-storage items may contain lead that can leach into food. Using food-safe equipment is an important step in reducing exposure.

✅ When preserving food:
• Use canning equipment made for food use.
• Be cautious with vintage or antique cookware and dishes.
• Avoid using items that may contain lead for cooking or food storage.
• Follow current, tested food-preservation methods.

Clean Hands Help Protect Against Lead Exposure!

Handwashing is more than a way to prevent germs—it can also help reduce exposure to lead.

Lead dust and contaminated soil can get onto our hands and then into our mouths, especially for young children. Washing hands with soap and water can help remove lead dust before it is accidentally swallowed.

👋 Remember to wash hands:
• After playing outside
• After playing with pets
• Before eating or drinking
• After activities that may involve lead exposure
