Tri-Governmental Partnership: Working Together for Our Region

Today, the City of Española joined Los Alamos County and Rio Arriba County for a joint meeting focused on the Regional Landfill Feasibility Study and the next steps toward exploring a regional approach to solid waste management.

This important discussion brought together representatives from all three governments to review the feasibility study and discuss opportunities for continued partnership on this regional project.

Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar and City Manager Michael Ortiz are excited about the opportunity to work alongside Los Alamos County and Rio Arriba County as we explore solutions that can benefit our communities and strengthen our region for years to come.

The City of Española looks forward to continued partnership and thoughtful planning as we move this project forward. Together, we can work toward regional solutions that serve the needs of our residents and communities.

The work continues. The partnerships are growing stronger. And Española is moving forward.

Today, federal, state, local, and Pueblo law enforcement leaders came together in Española to deliver an important message to our community: Operation Tempest is making an impact, and the work is far from over.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison, FBI Special Agent in Charge Justin Garris, Department of Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie, Española Police Chief Jack Jones, along with police chiefs from surrounding Pueblos and Santa Fe, joined forces for a press conference to update the public on Operation Tempest — a coordinated operation targeting Española’s top 10 offenders with the goal of apprehending them and pursuing federal charges.

The collaboration represents a powerful, united effort to address serious and repeat criminal activity in our community.

During the press conference, law enforcement leaders discussed the results and effectiveness of Operation Tempest in Española, the progress that has already been made, and plans to continue building on that success.

And the message was clear:
This operation is working.
Agencies are working together.
More progress is coming.

Española Mayor Dennis Tim Salazar and City Manager Michael Ortiz are encouraged by the progress being made and are excited to see this operation continue to move forward, bringing stronger partnerships, greater accountability, and increased safety to our community.

This is about protecting our residents, strengthening our community, and holding repeat offenders accountable.

Be sure to tune in to tonight’s local news for the full story, including specific details about Operation Tempest and the progress being made right here in Española.

Moving Forward Together

Today, Mayor Salazar and the Executive Team had the pleasure of sitting down with Representative-Elect Yolanda Jaramillo for a great conversation about the future of our communities.

We shared ideas and brainstormed ways we can work together to strengthen public safety, economic development, and alcohol and drug prevention. Representative-Elect Jaramillo is enthusiastic about bringing people together and building stronger partnerships among Rio Arriba County, Santa Fe County, the City of Española, surrounding communities, and our tribal nations.

When we come together with a shared vision and a commitment to collaboration, the possibilities are endless. The future is bright, and we look forward to the many partnerships, projects, and opportunities ahead!

Together, we can make a difference and build a stronger future for Northern New Mexico.

A Night of Celebration in the Española Valley! ✨

At last night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Salazar and the City Council had the great honor of celebrating our community by presenting three special proclamations recognizing outstanding people and achievements throughout Northern New Mexico. ❤️💙

🌟 Living Treasures of the Española Valley — Mel & Jeri Martinez

We proudly honored Mel and Jeri Martinez as Living Treasures of the Española Valley following their incredible 68th wedding anniversary!

For more than five decades, Mel and Jeri have dedicated their lives to volunteerism, faith, music, charitable service, fundraising, hospitality, and leadership. Through their compassion, generosity, and tireless commitment, they have supported families in need, schools, churches, scholarships, and countless community causes. Mel’s decades of musical service and Jeri’s fundraising, hospitality, and community work have enriched generations throughout Northern New Mexico. Their faith, kindness, resilience, and lifelong example of servant leadership have inspired their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and our entire Española Valley community. The City of Española is deeply grateful to Mel and Jeri for their extraordinary lifetime of service and dedication.

🏥 Presbyterian Española Hospital

We were also proud to recognize Presbyterian Española Hospital for earning the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Maternal Levels of Care Verification. On June 24, 2026, Presbyterian Española Hospital received this nationally recognized verification, reflecting its commitment to safe, high-quality, evidence-based maternal healthcare. This achievement demonstrates the hospital’s dedication to clinical excellence, patient safety, and quality care for expectant mothers and newborns—helping ensure that families throughout our region can receive the appropriate level of care close to home.

🏀 Mesa Vista Lady Trojans

And finally, we were incredibly proud to recognize the Mesa Vista High School Lady Trojans Basketball Team, who captured their FIRST-EVER Class 2A Girls Basketball State Championship in 2026! 🏆🎉

These outstanding student-athletes demonstrated dedication, perseverance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence that brought tremendous pride to Northern New Mexico. Their achievement represents countless hours of hard work and the unwavering support of their coaches, families, school staff, classmates, and fans. They truly exemplify the values of integrity, respect, determination, and community pride.
