The Esperance Volunteer Fire Department marked a meaningful moment of transition and gratitude during its recent annual banquet, as members and community supporters gathered to honor years of dedicated leadership while welcoming a new chief.
At the heart of the evening was a tribute to outgoing Chief Matt Deffer, who was recognized for his remarkable 12 years of service in the department’s top leadership role. Over more than a decade, Deffer guided the department through countless emergency responses, training initiatives, and community engagements, earning the respect and appreciation of fellow firefighters and residents alike. His steady leadership, commitment to public safety, and mentorship of younger members have left a lasting impact on the department and the Esperance community.
In a passing of the torch, the department proudly welcomed new Chief Bryan Deffer, who now steps into the role with the support and confidence of his peers.

The evening also celebrated individual achievements, with Howard Burman receiving the Fireman of the Year Award, and Bryan Deffer being honored with the Chief’s Award.
While the department looks ahead to a new chapter, the evening served as a heartfelt reminder of the dedication and sacrifice that define volunteer service. The members of the Esperance Volunteer Fire Department extended their sincere thanks to Matt Deffer for his 12 years of leadership, recognizing that his contributions will continue to shape the department for years to come.
