Hearty congratulations to Andy Buchanan and Mary Nell Bockman on being selected by the Essex Community Fund, a component of the Adirondack Community Foundation to receive the Francisca “Frisky” Paine Irwin Award, which honors an Essex resident who has deeply and steadfastly contributed to improving the Essex community.

Their work at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall and Whitcomb's Arts is unparalleled and I dare say that without their leadership, volunteerism and vision, we would not have anywhere near what we have today.

They shared four lessons with the packed house of attendees:

1) If you want to get something done, turn to the community. The experts are already there.

2) Utilize the creativity of volunteers. It’s priceless engagement that always yields dividends.

3) There’s a right size to everything. Balance ambition with sustainability.

4) Time is money. Donated dollars invested in something together magnifies the end result.

Bravo to them both and may their legacy of volunteerism inspire you to get involved in whatever it is you are most passionate about.

I’m hopeful that my vision for timing with this project becomes a reality. Regardless, it’s on my short list as a local infrastructure improvement to check off.

ESSEX | The town, in collaboration with Essex County Soil & Water, is now working to improve access to Whallons Bay and Lake Champlain.

Thank you to Librarian Sydney at the Belden Noble Memorial Library for inviting me to read children’s books about two summer activities I have really enjoyed in my life: riding my bike and hot air ballooning!

We had a terrific group of youngsters attend, eager to hear four great books and then put their artistic talents to the test as they made home made and dinosaur kites to be flown in the adjacent parking lot.

It was a great time and I look forward to the opportunity to read books and share in future adventures! 📚🎈🚴‍♀️

Many thanks to Willsboro neighbors and professional divers Mark and Tracie McGill for ensuring that our water intake screen out on the bottom of Lake Champlain is free of zebra mussels. We very much appreciate having a local dive team who is willing to make sure that the first point of contact between our water system and the lake is as clean and clear as possible.

Check out this video of their work!
