River access east of Mall Road closed for water infrastructure project

The Town of Estes Park will begin a water infrastructure improvement project on Mall Road in early September. For the public’s safety, access to the Big Thompson River area east side of the Mall Road bridge will be restricted until active construction in this specific area is finished, which is expected in mid-October.
The Mall Road Looping Project is a water infrastructure initiative that connects the existing system from Joel Estes Drive to U.S. 34 to improve water quality and stabilize system pressure in the northeastern water service area. This complex construction project involves installing a 12-inch water main that requires crossing the Big Thompson River, the Lake Estes siphon, and U.S. 34.

Get a closer look at your water system this September
Open House – Sept. 17 and Water Treatment Plant Tour – Sept. 24

The Town of Estes Park and its Water Division are welcoming the community to two upcoming events:

Water Shop Open House – Thurs., Sept. 17, 4–6 p.m. Tour the hub of the Town's water operations, including the water treatment laboratory. The Water Shop is located at 1360 Brook Dr., with accessible parking at the front entrance and general parking by the garages on the east side. Visitors will move through hands-on stations covering the water treatment lab, distribution, and equipment, with refreshments and giveaways available.

Marys Lake Water Treatment Plant Tour – Thurs., Sept. 24, 4–6 p.m. Walk the facility that treats and delivers drinking water to the community. Shuttles will be provided for this tour due to restricted parking. Further details regarding parking and shuttle arrangements will be posted at estes.org/waterfuture as they become available.

Background: Investing in Estes Park's Water Future

This open house is part of the Town's broader effort to keep the community informed about its water system and the investments needed to sustain it. The Town of Estes Park's Water Division serves approximately 6,000 customer accounts, relying on aging treatment and distribution infrastructure that will require more than $130 million in upgrades to keep pace with future needs. Recommended improvements include relocating and modernizing treatment processes and replacing cast-iron and galvanized steel water mains that have exceeded their expected service life. These priorities are laid out in the Town's updated Water Master Plan, which provides a long-term strategy for safe, reliable, and resilient drinking water through the 2025–2045 planning horizon. The Town Board will discuss these needs and customer water rates this fall, with public hearings tentatively scheduled in late October and early November. Customers are encouraged to join the conversation.

The Peak launches expanded weekday transit service

Pilot program takes place in September

Estes Park’s free seasonal transit service, The Peak, will adjust its schedule this fall as part of a new pilot program to improve weekday service.

The Peak’s current 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily summer schedule will wrap up on Monday, Aug. 31.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, weekday service (Monday through Friday) will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the Brown, Blue, Silver, and Gold routes. This eight-hour weekday pilot program is funded in part by the 2024 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant.

Weekend service (Saturday and Sunday) will continue at the regular 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. schedule through Sunday, Sept. 27. The Red Route (downtown/Elkhorn Avenue) will maintain its daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. schedule through Sunday, Oct 18. In addition, all routes will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 7.

This pilot program is based on recommendations in the Estes Park Multimodal Transportation Plan and the Estes Park Transit Development Plan. More information on these plans is available at estes.org/transportationstudies. Ridership will be monitored at each stop to help inform potential route and schedule adjustments for the 2027 season. The Bustang to Estes service will continue running every weekend through Sunday, Sept. 27. Tickets for purchase are available at RideBustang.com.

Applications are currently being accepted for a volunteer position on the Local Marketing District, Visit Estes Park’s (VEP), Board of Directors to complete a term expiring Dec. 31, 2030. Board Directors must have lived within VEP's Service Area for at least one year prior to appointment and must remain a resident of the Service Area throughout their term.
