This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. Their sacrifice made the everyday moments we all cherish possible-- time with family, traditions shared, and the simple joys of community.

From all of us at The Taffy Shop, thank you to those who served and especially to those who never came home. We remember you with gratitude and respect.

🇺🇸 Veterans and active duty service members, please take a complimentary US flag from our counter as a small token of our thanks as we remember those who have served.

If you’re in Estes Park right now… get outside and take a look around.

After a couple days of snow, rain, and mountain weather doing whatever it wanted, the payoff showed up all at once this morning.

Driving down Highway 7 on the way to work at The Taffy Shop, this view of Lumpy Ridge reminded me about that local benefit, catching mother nature in the act ...fog rolling down from the Continental Divide through Rocky Mountain National Park while the fresh sun lit up the frost and snow still hanging on the trees.

These are the moments that make living in Estes Park feel unreal many days. Photos barely do it justice. One of the best parts of mountain life is that beauty like this can show up when you least expect it.

Yesterday afternoon, as that light snow drifted through downtown Estes Park, something unexpected happened in front of our shop.

For just a few moments, time slowed down.

A young couple stepped into view of the camera outside The Taffy Shop and paused there together beneath the falling snow. Then, right there in front of the window that Taffy Cam looks through, the young man got down on one knee.

We don’t know if they had planned it, or whether it was a spur-of-the-moment decision inspired by the storybook surroundings in Estes Park. We only know what we saw: surprise, happy tears, trembling hands, and two young people staring at each other while the rest of the world had disappeared.

A few minutes later, they stepped inside the shop so happy, cheeks rosy from the cold and excitement. We snapped a quick photo by the Model K wrapper, handed them a small bag of fresh taffy to celebrate, and just as quickly as they appeared, they were gone again, back out into the snowy street leaving Sheri at the counter, and the other couple in the store - just happy!

And now we’re left with a mystery. Who are they? Are they local? Did they travel here from somewhere far away? Was Estes Park always part of their story, or did it become part of it yesterday?

We have seen generations of families walk through our doors. First dates. Honeymoons. Long ago children who return with todays great grandchildren. But every now and then, we witness a moment that feels especially timeless.

If this story reaches the couple, or if someone knows who they are, we’d love to hear the rest of the story (and share the video with them).

This was a sweet story that arrived without warning, carried in quietly with the snow, and 'sweetly' placed in the right place at the right time.

Thank goodness there's still old fashioned note writers in the world. Rod came in this morning with a piece of paper ripped out of his mini notebook with his orders from Lincoln Nebraska, having taken a detour from a wedding before he goes home, to fulfil his family's orders. These days most people come in with their note on an iPhone-- just a few years ago orders were always written on scraps of paper receipts or napkins, so it was refreshing this morning to see an old fashioned note taker come in. For full transparency I have five notes in my pocket currently, and prefer paper over phone notes 📓 📱 🍬
