Community Update: Estill Shooting Investigation

The Estill Police Department would like to share an update and reassure our community following last night’s shooting incidents.

After intensive investigation, one suspect, a juvenile, has been taken into custody and charged with attempted murder and other related charges. Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads related to additional suspects.

Thankfully, we have received reports from medical authorities that the two injured individuals are stable and expected to recover. We are so thankful to EMS for their lifesaving actions.

We want residents to know that public safety remains our top priority. Specialized units from SLED, along with officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies, were instrumental in the investigation and in locating and arresting the suspect. In addition to SLED, we thank the Hampton County Sheriff's Office, the Hampton Police Department, the Varnville Police Department, and the Yemassee Police Department for their invaluable support last night.

We also want to thank the individuals from the community who provided tips and otherwise cooperated with the police to assist us last night. Community support is absolutely essential in situations like this. Estill stood strong with us last night.

We know that incidents like this are unsettling. Please know that law enforcement remains fully engaged, and we are committed to keeping the community informed as more information becomes available. We appreciate the cooperation, patience, and support shown by our residents.

Additional updates will be shared when appropriate.

FROM CHIEF SOLOMON:

This evening, the Estill Police Department responded to two serious incidents involving gunfire, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Following the second incident, officers also received reports of additional gunfire heard in the area, the origin of which is currently being investigated.

At this time, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the general public.

We have requested assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, and surrounding agencies. Residents may notice an increased law enforcement presence, including air support, as part of our coordinated response to ensure public safety and thoroughly investigate all reports.

We understand that hearing gunfire and seeing a large law enforcement response is alarming. Please know that these additional resources are being used out of an abundance of caution and to prevent any further violence. We recognize the concern this causes our community. Our focus is on public safety, accountability, and preventing further violence.

Out of respect for those involved and to protect the integrity of the investigation, we cannot release additional details at this time.

We ask residents to remain calm, stay indoors if possible this evening, avoid speculation, and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.

Updates will be provided as soon as it is appropriate to do so. Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting one another during this difficult time.

From Chief Chauncey D. Solomon, Sr.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the three police officers who were killed yesterday in a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, and we hold in prayer the two other officers critically wounded in yesterday’s tragic events. The men and women of the Estill Police Department extend deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of these fallen officers. These heroes answered the call to serve, walking into danger to protect their community, and we will not forget their sacrifice.

In law enforcement, we are one family. When tragedy strikes in one place, it is felt by all of us. These officers were responding to a domestic stalking situation and were senselessly gunned down. Across our nation, domestic related calls represent some of the most dangerous situations police officers encounter. Every day, officers face dangers most will never see, yet they continue to serve with courage and dedication. These brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice, and their service will never be forgotten.

We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Pennsylvania, and we ask for continued prayers for the fallen, the wounded, and their families. We are also deeply grateful for the support our own community shows to the men and women who serve here at home, who also face danger every time they are called out to serve the public. As this sad event shows, small towns and rural areas are not immune to this kind of tragedy.
May God bless the United States of America.
