Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This significant event marks the effective end of slavery in the United States. It's a day of reflection, celebration, and remembrance of Black history and culture.

Hey everyone, it’s getting to be that time of year when we start planning our Wednesday on the Porch events.

One of the most popular nights we had last year was when we hosted Opus 216 for our own little Symphony at Sunset. We definitely want to bring them back again this year.

Because the event drew such a big crowd, hosting it in my front yard again wouldn’t be fair to my neighbors, especially since we’re expecting close to a hundred people this time.

If you haven’t heard Opus 216 before, I’ll share the link to their Symphony at Sunset series at Voinovich Park behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re a three‑string ensemble and they’re incredible to listen to outdoors.

We’ve been trying to find a place to host the event. We reached out to the library now that it’s reopened, hoping to use the lawn for a free community concert, but they let us know the surrounding property is owned by the City of Euclid, so they can’t, or wont, approve it.

We then contacted Shore Cultural Centre because Triangle Park would be a perfect setting, and Shore is home to the Euclid Symphony.

The City responded that private groups are not allowed to rent or use parks for events, including Triangle Park and the Shore grounds, and that only City‑sponsored events can use those spaces.

Our last thought was the area behind Henn Mansion, but they let us know that while we could hold something inside, the outdoor property is also City‑owned, so that option is off the table as well.

At this point we’re stuck and looking for recommendations on where we could host a free outdoor concert on a Wednesday or Thursday evening in July.

If you were at our Opus 216 event last year, please share your photos. If you’ve never heard them, I highly recommend catching their Symphony at Sunset performance at Voinovich Park on Sundays.

And if you know of a nice outdoor grassy area that isn’t owned by the City of Euclid and would allow a peaceful evening of string music as the sun goes down, we’d love to hear your suggestions.

Thank you in advance, and hopefully we can make this happen within the city of Euclid despite the roadblocks.

Otherwise we have to maybe consider options outside the city limits.
