All month long, our middle school National Junior Honor Society students educate us on the accomplishments of notable African Americans. Here's their research on the legendary James Baldwin.

"Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” -James Baldwin

James Baldwin was a gay African American novelist and activist who talked mainly about racial, sexual, and class distinctions in America. His works were often ignored by critics at the time due to them discussing such controversial topics but in recent times have been held in high esteem. #BlackHistoryMonth

"During my time at Kent State University, I participated in an internship that changed my life. I went from being focused on building a career in corporate America, to really considering how I could use my education and passion to impact my community and address real issues. The internship also gave me an opportunity to reflect about my experiences as a student leader on campus and led me to apply to a master’s program in higher education administration and student personnel. I have worked at multiple college campuses where I have been able to focus on creating more welcoming and inclusive campus cultures for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. Throughout my career, I have implemented, coordinated and facilitated equity, inclusion and justice initiatives as a college professor, university administrator and community leader. I am also actively engaged in research, where I study the intersections of race and gender at historically white and predominantly white colleges and universities. Most recently, I began a consulting firm where I work with organizations to cultivate learning experiences for professionals to understand the nature of systemic and structural inequities that contribute to disparities in organizational experiences and outcomes."
