While the people of Eugene were braving pepper balls and teargas to stand up for immigrant rights on January 30th, Eugene Police officer Martin Siller was making racist and misogynistic comments on a phone call with another officer.

That footage was released on May 8th by one of the protestors arrested at the Federal Building. The footage went viral, and a few hours later Siller resigned.

Police Chief Skinner claims that conduct like Siller’s is never tolerated in the Eugene Police Department, but Siller had been with EPD for 7 years - almost as long as Chief Skinner. And after 7 years, it wasn’t Skinner that got rid of him. It was the community.

Skinner says that he sets the tone of what’s acceptable for EPD, so let’s take a look at the tone he’s setting. Under Skinner’s leadership, the Eugene Police Department has collaborated with ICE and Homeland Security by interfering with legal observers, rapid responders, and protesters, letting ICE agents terrorize our communities.

He championed the use of Flock cameras, a mass surveillance system that tracked the movements of every vehicle in Eugene, without warrants, until the people of Eugene forced the city to cancel the contract.

He has tolerated racism and misogyny, as well accusations of domestic and sexual violence, within the ranks of EPD for years - just as long as the public doesn’t find out.

If that’s the tone Skinner’s setting, then he needs to go! We deserve real accountability, and the removal of Chief Skinner is one of many things we need to make our city one that prioritizes the safety and dignity of all people. We won’t stand for a system that won’t stand for us.

“I’m a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and I saw with my own eyes how the military is not a tool of spreading democracy. It’s not a tool of spreading peace. It is a machine of death and destruction that benefits a very small number of rich people in this country at the expense of our working class members that are sent overseas to fight and kill and the victims of these military attacks.”

John, a veteran and an organizer with the PSL, shares his perspective on the war on Iran, the cost of living crisis and what Memorial Day means to him at the Linn County Veterans Memorial in Albany, OR.

Trump, when asked if he was concerned about the impact of the war on Iran on the cost of living, responded “I don’t think about Americans financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.”

John shares that working people in Albany and Corvallis are suffering greatly from the cost of living crisis due to being in one of the most rent-burdened areas in the country.

This Memorial Day, commit to building the anti-war movement! Learn more at pslweb.org/action

🔗tinyurl.com/MayActionNetworkWebinar (link in bio)

Join the PSL Action Network for this month’s national webinar featuring socialist candidates and organizers from across the country who are building grassroots campaigns rooted in working-class struggle and collective action! Our webinar panel will bring together Joe Tache (MA), Jasmine Brown (FL), Ramsey Robinson (CA), Greg Levy (OH), and Andre Easton (NY) – as well as 2024 socialist presidential candidate Claudia De la Cruz – for a timely discussion on the growing movement for independent socialist politics in the United States.

As communities and families across the country face rising rents, attacks on workers, deepening inequality, environmental crisis, and bipartisan support for war and austerity, more people are searching for a political alternative that actually represents working people.

Featured candidates will discuss how socialist campaigns can help organize resistance to the billionaire class, strengthen local movements, and connect everyday struggles to a broader vision for systemic change.

➡️Swipe to learn more and take action!

On the night of January 30th, Eugene Police officer Martin Siller was on patrol during anti-ICE protests at the old federal building. While protesters standing up for immigrant rights were being teargassed, he was making racist, misogynistic comments on a phone call with another officer. He used racial slurs, made racist remarks about Black people and immigrants and dismissive comments about domestic violence. Siller’s bodycam footage was released by local documentarian Tim Lewis, one of the protesters arrested at the federal building and a few hours after the footage was released, Siller resigned. The footage went viral online and highlights the culture of violence and racism in the department.
