ON THIS DAY…John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and spent his early childhood on a cotton farm near Black Oak, Arkansas. His upbringing in this rural northeast Arkansas Delta region, where his family worked as cotton farmers and construction workers, inspired his novel A Painted House.

Let's talk about John Rollin Ridge!

Also known as Chees-quat-a-law-ny or Yellow Bird, he was a Cherokee writer born in New Echota in 1827. He spent part of his youth right here in Northwest Arkansas, attending the Ozark Institute.

He became the first Native American to publish a full-length novel in English (The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta, 1854), a story that helped shape early Western outlaw tales.

But before California, he was a young poet living in the Ozarks, putting words to the beauty and the heartbreak around him.

I’m working on a full video about his Arkansas chapter, his writing, and why his story matters to our region.

Stay tuned—it’s coming soon! In the meantime, drop a comment: Have you read anything by John Rollin Ridge before?

You simply must look at this picture at once! I can hardly keep from laughing with delight just thinking of it!

This was taken during one of the tally-ho parties, and I assure you it was every bit as splendid as it appears. Imagine us all climbing aboard the great open coach, hair styled à la mode, skirts gathered carefully, and everyone calling out greetings as we were setting off on the grandest adventure imaginable.

The horses were eager, the road wound through the hills, and the air—oh!—so cool and fresh it felt like a tonic. We rode along laughing and pointing out the scenery, certain that nowhere could possibly be lovelier than this very moment. It was impossible not to feel cheerful, even important, perched up there together to see and be seen.

Everyone says a tally-ho ride is the proper way to see the Ozarks, and now I understand why. You see the country slowly, pleasantly, with good company and plenty of time to admire every turn in the road. Truly, it is the sort of outing one talks about long after the ride is done.

I wish you might have been seated beside me—I know you would have enjoyed it as much as I did.

So do follow along, for I have quite a stack of pictures yet to send, and I should hate for you to miss a single one!

Yours in the highest spirits,

SUMMER DAYS IN THE OZARKS 🌿
Eureka Springs, Arkansas — 1915

My dear friends,

I simply must send you this—just look at it! This is the title illustration from a most delightful little brochure called Summer Days in the Ozarks, printed in 1915 to entice travelers toward Eureka Springs and its lovely hills, springs, and winding roads!

In the days ahead, I shall be sharing images and excerpts from these pages, just as I might once have tucked them into an envelope and posted them off to you one by one. You’ll see how visitors are encouraged to pass their summers here—riding through the hills, breathing the cool air, and enjoying a most healthful and restorative retreat to escape the heat, the crowds, and the strain of modern life.

So do keep close and follow along, for I have quite a stack of pictures and passages yet to send, and I should hate for you to miss a single one!
