Heads up, Humboldt! The Humboldt County Department of Aviation will hold an aircraft rescue and firefighting training exercise on Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. It will take place at the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV), located at 3561 Boeing Ave. in McKinleyville. โ
Using propane-fueled props, the training exercise will simulate the conditions of a live fire emergency and staff will practice tactics and operate equipment used in aircraft rescue and firefighting operations. Live fire training gives staff the opportunity for hands-on, realistic practice to prepare for a real-life aircraft emergency.

During the exercise, airport visitors and those in the vicinity of ACV should expect to see fire in a controlled area on airport property and personnel responding to fight the fire. The fire may be visible from surrounding roads, homes or by air. Please plan accordingly.
There are no planned street closures and airport operations will not be impacted as a result of this two-day training exercise.
The Federal Aviation Administration requires all certified commercial airports to perform an aircraft rescue and training exercise every year. The purpose of this exercise is to train airport staff on how to respond to a fire emergency at ACV. The emergency simulation is intended to provide a real-time, realistic experience of a fire incident and allow staff to practice together, assess emergency response procedures and solidify strong operational relationships.
