The annual Unmet Transit Needs process is now open for comments! Please let us know the trips you cannot make with public transit. All comments will be logged, analyzed by staff, and considered by the Social Services Transportation Advisory Council. Although finding sustainable operating funds for new or expanded service to meet transit needs is a challenge, the comments collected during this required annual process are important to capture community need.

Humboldt County Association of Governments Appoints Rob Holmlund as Executive Director

The Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Holmlund as its next Executive Director, effective August 17, 2026.

With more than 20 years of planning experience in both the public and private sectors, Holmlund brings extensive expertise in transportation, housing, climate resilience, economic development, and regional planning. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a collaborative leadership style and a strong commitment to building partnerships that deliver meaningful results for local communities.

As Executive Director, Holmlund plans to focus on strengthening HCAOG's role as a regional leader in transportation planning, expanding collaboration with member agencies and partners, and enhancing the organization's effectiveness in addressing Humboldt County's transportation and planning priorities.

"I am honored to join HCAOG as Executive Director and to work alongside its dedicated staff, member agencies, Tribal governments, transit operators, Caltrans, community partners, and residents to deliver meaningful results for Humboldt County," said Holmlund. "Transportation investment is essential to our region's ecological health, economic vitality, public safety, resilience, and overall quality of life. I look forward to advancing projects that benefit HCAOG's member agencies and the communities they serve."

HCAOG welcomes Holmlund to the organization and looks forward to his leadership as the agency continues its mission of improving regional transportation, fostering collaboration among local governments, and enhancing the quality of life for residents throughout Humboldt County.

In partnership with local cities, HCAOG is rolling out a series of temporary traffic calming measures across the county this summer. These demonstration projects are part of the Humboldt County Vision Zero Action Plan, a project funded by the US Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

HCAOG has committed to a regional Vision Zero policy with the goal to reduce and eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on our roads.

What and Where are the Safety Demonstrations?

• Arcata — Four rubber speed humps installed along 11th and K Streets.
• Ferndale — Speed humps and bike lane striping along 5th Avenue between Arlington Street and Shaw Avenue.
• Eureka — Temporary mini roundabout striping, wheel stops, and delineators at the intersections of Pine Street and West Hawthorne Street, and at Humboldt Street and G Street.
• Fortuna — Programmable radar speed feedback signs along the 12th Street and Ross Hill Road school corridors.

Converting intersections on high-speed roadways to single-lane roundabouts reduces the number of conflict points from 32 to just 8. Roundabouts reduce injury crashes by an impressive 88%.

Roundabouts are an FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasure. HCAOG staff will be at the Wharfinger this evening from 5:30 - 7:30 to talk with community partners about the connection between land use and transportation. This will be an informative workshop with many opportunities for people to learn and provide their feedback about plans for Eureka housing.
