Wanted: thoughtful high school or college students who are interested in politics and looking for something meaningful to do this summer -- for the inaugural class of Huffman Democracy Summer Fellows, starting in just a few weeks!
Here's a bit more about this exciting new program. Twelve dedicated high school and college students from my district will be selected to participate with peers from around the country in a program focused on educating and training the next generation of political activists, organizers, and leaders.
Modelled after the successful “Democracy Summer School” program conceived by my Maryland colleague Congressman Jamie Raskin, the program includes an exciting on-line seminar and curriculum designed by Rep. Raskin (a constitutional scholar) focused on the history of social and political change in America and the progress of political democracy. In addition, Fellows will be trained as organizers and activists, getting hands-on field experience in politics.
Democracy Summer 2021 is a partnership between the Huffman and Raskin campaign teams, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and several other congressional campaigns around the country. The theme of this year's academic seminar is “The Fight to Vote: Nonviolent Movements, Violent Reactions and the Continuing Struggle for Strong Democracy in America.”
Huffman Democracy Fellows will learn from activist heroes of all ages, policy experts and top political and community organizers across the country. While this year’s program is still taking shape, past Democracy Summer speakers have included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Civil Rights leaders Bob Moses and Rev. William J. Barber II, Prof. Laurence Tribe, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other luminaries.
In the training component of the program, Fellows will participate in essential political field activities and initiatives like phone banking, canvassing, registering voters, social media initiatives, planning and managing political events, and more. Each participate receives a $500 stipend and a program t-shirt.
Additional information and the application for the Democracy Summer 2021 Fellowship can be found at the link below. PLEASE NOTE: there is a short deadline period for these fellowship decisions -- THE DEADLINE IS MAY 14th.
If you know a student who may be interested in this life-changing program, please share this with them right away. We expect the limited number of positions in this year’s class of Democracy Fellows to fill quickly, so please encourage students to apply now.
