A reminder from your Six Rivers National Forest recreation team: please always place trash INSIDE bear-proof trash bins… never next to them.

Recently on the Mad River Ranger District, someone left bags of trash beside a bear-proof dumpster overnight. A bear got into the garbage before recreation crews could arrive the next morning. Even if one bin appears full, please check nearby bins.

When bears learn campgrounds are an easy source of food, they can become habituated to people. That puts visitors, staff, and ultimately the bear at risk. In some cases, habituated bears may have to be removed or euthanized.

A few extra steps from all of us can help keep wildlife wild and our campgrounds safe for everyone.

✔ Use bear-proof bins properly
✔ Never leave trash or food unattended
✔ Double check your campsite before turning in for the night

Thank you for helping protect wildlife on the Six Rivers National Forest.

The 1960s had their own kind of social media... a picnic table.

Families gathered on national forests and grasslands to eat, talk and catch up face to face.

No screens, no notifications… just time together in the fresh air.

This Memorial Day weekend you are invited to come disconnect in your big backyard.

With Memorial Day weekend just days away we hope folks will take the extra time to have fun and recreate. Remember, it’s important to stay safe this by following a few heat safety tips.

In extreme heat, dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

Wildfire Preparedness Week: What does being prepared mean to you? 🫵

Home Hardening 🏡

Prepare your home to reduce the risk of possible ignitions from direct flame contact, radiant heat and lofting embers. 🔥

Protecting your home from wildfires involves taking specific steps to make it more resilient. Home hardening includes using fire-resistant building materials, adopting safe landscaping practices, and implementing preventative measures to reduce fire risk and enhance property safety.
