Fire Restrictions continue as hunting season begins

As temperatures remain high and fuels continue to dry out, fire restrictions are still in place across the Six Rivers National Forest to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires. As hunting season begins and camping season continues, we are asking all forest visitors to remain vigilant and recreate responsibly.



The following is prohibited during fire restrictions:

🔥Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, except in Wilderness areas, Designated Fire Safe Sites, or within stoves, charcoal grills or fire rings provided in the Developed Recreation Sites. See Exhibit A for a list of sites.

🚭 Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.

🔥 Welding, or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame.

🚫 Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device that is properly installed, maintained, and in effective working order

Smokey Bear and forest staff had a blast at the Humboldt County Fair last week! 🐻🔥🎡

We hope you enjoyed our coloring station and trivia game! Who still has their Smokey hat and bandana? 🤠

📞 Connecting Communities, Forest Service Style!

Long before cell phones and Wi-Fi, Forest Service employees were helping connect some of the most remote communities within the Six Rivers National Forest.

This 1934 photo shows a telephone line being strung between Orleans and Somes Bar. Fred Wilder is pictured working on the reel while Lee Morford attaches the line to a pole. The third man in the photo is unidentified.

The Forest Service was often among the first to bring telephone connections into remote areas, building communication networks across some incredibly rugged terrain.

A fascinating glimpse into Forest Service history and the people who helped connect our rural communities nearly a century ago.

Make noise on trails so you don’t surprise a bear. 🔊
Give bears space — back up and let them do their thing. ↩️
Do not feed wildlife. Ever. 🚫🍽️
If you see a bear: stay calm, slowly back away, and speak firmly.
