Well, if the hot weather didn’t give it away, the flowers tell us that spring has sprung. Florida dogwoods dot the landscape here at Sugarberry Hill and are a spring favorite in the South. Carolina jessamine is another common resident here at SBH. The male flowers of oak trees, known as catkins, produce lots of pollen—and a mess in gutters and on rooftops. The tulips planted by the Augusta Area Master Gardeners are also in bloom. It’s just a really pretty day here.

We had a visitor yesterday at Sugarberry Hill (formerly Laverlea Preserve)—a black rat snake. We first noticed it from the back porch, then approached where it paused beneath the giant crepe myrtles. It tolerated our presence just long enough for us to snap a few photos.

Black rat snakes can grow to 8 feet—and this one appears to be at least five feet long. These snakes are recognized by the white patches on their chins, glossy bodies, and angled sides. Their necks are narrower than their heads. They are non-venomous constrictors, and as their name implies, their favorite prey are rats and mice—making them excellent neighbors. Nothing like free pest control.

A couple of weeks back, some of the good folks from the Augusta Area Master Gardeners visited Sugarberry Hill (formerly Laverlea) to plant tulips and put up bluebird houses—and they had a great time doing it. Already, we've had confirmed sitings of bluebirds using the houses and the tulips are reaching for the sky. The Central Savannah River Land Trust wants to thank the Augusta Area Master Gardeners for the work they're doing around SBH.

A couple of our board members, Mike Floyd and Glenn Vaught, visited Sugarberry Hill (formerly known as Laverlea), during the recent snow. They took some great photos of the grounds and home, which are beautiful under any condition, but are exceptionally pretty in such a rare and good covering of snow.

The Central Savannah River Land Trust had a busy and exciting day at Sugarberry Hill (formerly known as Laverlea)! By mid-morning, we welcomed members of the Savannah River Group of the Sierra Club for a walking tour of the property and house. Later in the day, we hosted several participants from the University of Georgia Master Gardener program, who not only toured the grounds but also explored ideas for creating future gardens. We’re looking forward to seeing what they come up with! 🌿🌼🌳
