Thank you and Goodbye
Nearly twenty-four years ago I applied for a job as library director. Fresh out of college with a degree not related to libraries, I had the misconception of what the job entailed and once I realized I wouldn't get paid to read all day, I got to work!
From a wooden card catalog to an automated system, one computer for both staff and library users to 11 computers, a couple of laptops, a couple of tablets and e-readers, and from paperbacks, hardcovers and VHS tapes to the addition of e-books and e-audio, digital databases, DVDs and Blu-rays, like a mother I held the hand of the library and urged it to do better, be more.
A special shout-out to my first two assistants, Julie and Leeann, who allowed me to develop into the kind of supervisor I wanted to be. I know I wouldn't have been successful at all without Anne, who worked side by side with me for seventeen years and was instrumental in developing the Ramblin' Reader program to local day cares while I went the other direction and delivered books to the senior residents at the senior housing, and Denise, my current assistant who weathered the COVID-19 pandemic with me and continued to serve, albeit masked.
Despite what we are taught in library management, I made friends with many of my library patrons. I have been to weddings and funerals, high school and college graduations of young patrons that have grown up and moved away. And recently, with the birth of a little, the library now has a family of four generations that uses the library and I can proudly say I have served them all.
Half of my entire life and 3/4 of my adult life has been spent nurturing this library, one book at a time, and I can't help but feel emotional about leaving. Today was my last day. But as with any of the thousands of books that have passed through my hands over the course of these years, eventually a page is turned, the book ends and it's time to start anew.
Thank you, Evansdale, for being my professional home for so many years. You will be missed. ~Shannon Jensen
