We have had several inquiries about one of elk, Boo. Boo is 18 yrs. old this year, which is considered elderly in elk years. In many animal species hormones will slow down or cease completely and can cause animals like elk, deer, and moose to not grow antlers. The energy expended to grow antlers in the past can be utilized for their bodies. Antlered animals can still grow antlers into old age, some just won't like our guy, Boo.

It’s Rendezvous season! First up is the 39th gathering of the Bear River Rendezvous.🪵🏕️

From archery and primitive shoot competitions to the Fry Pan Toss, campfire music, and live historical demonstrations, there’s family-friendly fun around every corner.

At Bear River State Park you can see bison and elk, sometimes you'll get to see them together! When we get seasons that are extremely dry, we let them all navigate between the two west pastures. This helps prevent overgrazing and a healthier balance in each of the two pastures. The elk also love to go wading in the pond on a hot summer day!

The Virile Crayfish. These crustaceans have been introduced into the Bear River and are like noxious weeds. They are unfortunately taking over our region's native Pilose Crayfish. The Virile Crayfish have distinctive blue-green claws and are generally bigger that the Pilose Crayfish.

We cannot be sure, but suspect this is a Little Brown Bat. This tiny, little (1 1/2" - 2" long) thing ended up resting by the women's restroom door at the visitor center. It was safely moved to a much better location! Little Brown Bats are common in Wyoming but have been on the decline due to White Nose Syndrome. Bats play a very important role in our ecosystems by eating up to a 1000 insects an hour and are pollinators!

Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. Juveniles look much like adults but lack the distinctive red tail. They become adults at around two years old, at this age they molt their youth feathers and gain their red tail feathers.

Our last Hawk Talk of the season is Tuesday, August 18th (tomorrow)! Come join us at Bear River State Park tomorrow at 5:30pm at the Bear River Shelter! HawkWatch will be bringing a raptor to check out and learn about! Free, family event! We do ask that you leave pets at home for the safety of the bird and its handler.
