My public comment from the land use committee pertaining to NU request for rezoning.
My name is Darlene Cannon I’m a 2nd ward resident, Chair of the city of Evanston equity empowerment commission. However tonight I come to you as a homeowner, taxpayer and Lifelong Evanstonian.
I’m angered and disgusted at how nu is playing an intentionally divisive game. They are pitting the residents who live around the stadium site against Black residents in Evanston.” They are trying to make those concerned about trauma-center or the destruction of their neighborhood that they don’t want blacks residents to build wealth. It’s an old but effective strategy.
It’s insulting to black people intelligence that a zoning change and a stadium is going to create generational wealth. It will provide low-income hourly jobs at best. This will only perpetuate the racial income gap.
Nu sees an opportunity that they could benefit from on the backs of black peoples voice and labor. This is what structural racism looks like.
No one cared about the 2 & 5 ward having to endure traffic from Eths games, lack of parking due to games and or a waste transfer station in a middle of a neighborhood until it was determined that our struggles could be exploited. Oh but they’ll fix that by allowing buses from concerts to idol at Eths and generate more pollution in the 2 & 5 wards.
Again, the only jobs that by is offering are low level service jobs . If nu is really interested in improving equity in Evanston then they need to do everything that’s been previous stated contribute to the schools on an ongoing basis without making us beg for it.
Nu needs to COMMIT to a skilled trades program. They need to address affordable housing which is driving Black people out of Evanston and is a crisis that school social workers spend most of their time trying to solve unhoused families.
We need community stakeholders that aren’t handpicked and are not willing to align with forces desiring zoning changes to build a football field with no real meaningful improved quality of life change for Evanstonians.
Some organizations lead by wealthy residents center black issues when they see an opportunity they can benefit from.

Another chance for FREE forest therapy in July ..... thanks to Morton Grove Public Library!!

Linne Woods has been one of my favorite walking spots to go with my kids and dog for years, and I'm excited to be guiding forest therapy for the first time there with the MGPL.

Let's wind down from the 4th of July week of loud parties and festivities with some slower, quieter, restorative forest bathing together.

We will give our thinking brains a break, and tune into our senses and notice what's around us and inside us with curiosity and compassion.

Studies show that forest bathing provides a wide range of benefits for our physical and mental health, including improved immunity, nervous system regulation, mood, mental clarity, attention span, creativity and more. But so many other benefits can arise when we slow down and tend to our relationship with nature in the present moment -- the possibilities are endless.

Please support the proposal to allocate $2 million ARPA funds to support evanston’s existing small businesses. This would mean so much to Evanston as we all work hard to recover from the effects of COViD and from inflation. I would to ensure that second ward businesses continues to grow. With this potential financial support this could be the long awaited and needed help.

Please use this form to either submit written comments or indicate whether you intend to provide real-time comments or via telephone. Sign-in should be completed prior to 4:45 pm the night of the Economic Development meeting to help provide for an orderly meeting.
