Casella Okulaja arrived at IWSE bearing gifts bags, lots of them! Casella is the teen advisor for Jack and Jill of America, Inc. - North Shore Chapter. The wonderful teens in this chapter put together loads of gift bags for our families, and they wrote inspirational notes.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2-19, dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

We appreciate you, Jack and Jill teens of the North Shore chapter! Thank you, Casella, for dropping off the gift bags! Happy Holidays!

HELP A CHILD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Join us in creating magic for children and their families this holiday season!

I think we all remember a special time we received an unexpected gift and what it meant to us. Now, you can create that moment for our families.

We are in our final week of our annual Family to Family campaign. This is our 15th year of running this campaign! Every year, we ask our wonderful supporters to help provide gifts for our little ones and their families during the holidays. It's easy to donate! Here is the link to click: https://www.iwse.org/giving

We use the donations to purchase $50 gift cards for members of our IWSE families who have signed up for Family to Family. Families will receive the gift cards next week so that they can shop for each other.

We will be honest. Times are tough for everyone, but especially for our families. Food prices are at a historic high. Gas prices are up, as is rent. Our Family to Family campaign is a way to help struggling families enjoy the holidays. But we desperately need your help right now. We have never not met our goal, but this year we will have to create some magic of our own to reach the goal this week.

If you can swing a donation of $5, $10 or $25, we can give the maximum amount of $50 to each family member. Right now, we need to raise at least $2,000 more or we will have to reduce the amount we give.

How We Can Reach Our $2,000 Goal:

10 gifts of $25
50 gifts of $10
250 gifts of $5

For just $5, $10, $25 or more, you will give the gift of a liftime, one of our families will never forget. Our families are always so incredibly grateful for the gift cards that come from our community. We appreciate any amount you can donate.

Already have enough stuff? Ask for a donation to Family to Family!

Part of a generous book club or other group? Make a group donation of any size!

Want to teach your children about giving? This is perfect. Your child can directly help one of our children with your gift.

Hear from our executive, director, Stephen Vick, about an innovative collaboration to address workforce shortages in early childhood education. Students can earn a degree in early chilhood education while learning English as a Second Language. The first cohort of 17 students started this summer, and this program could be a model for other communities to follow. Rebeca Mendoza, an IWSE board emmber and executive director of Evanston Latinos, also is interviewed.

When we work together, we can accomplish anything!

Oakton College recently partnered with several Evanston organizations to create a pilot program that combines English as a second language and early childhood education training. The program aims to address a workforce shortage of early childhood educators and a community need for ESL and job traini...

We were honored to host Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam, third from left, at our Family Support home-visiting program in Skokie today. Villivalam represents Skokie and the 8th District. The senator is the new chairman of the state’s Early Childhood Committee.

The Early Childhood Alliance,
of which Infant Welfare Society of Evanston is a member, invited the senator to visit our program and Swift Child Care Early Childhood Center in Skokie. The ECA is a collective of over 45 multi-sector organizations committed to helping improve the lives of young children 0-5 years old and their families in the Niles Township area.

Pictured, left to right: Astrid Suarez, director of Collective Impact for ECA; Zakia Ali, family liaison for ECA; Senator Villivalam; Tina Vanderwarker, ECA executive director; Ilinka Wallace, regional council manager for Region 1-B-D (Cook North) of Birth to Five Illinois; and Stephen Vick, executive director of Infant Welfare Society of Evanston.

Thank you, Senator Villivalam, for learning about early childhood programs in Skokie!

What a treat it was to visit the beautiful Evanston History Center yesterday to hear a fascinating presentation from Arden Handler, DrPH, a dedicated member of our Board of Directors and a nationally renowned leader in maternal and child health advocacy, policy, epidemiology, and public health system improvement. Thank you, Dr. Handler, Evanston History Center and all who attended (full house!) and asked such insightful questions!

Dr. Handler is Director of the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health and a Professor in the Community Health Sciences division of the UIC School of Public Health. She presented on her research article on "The Founding and Evolution of Infant Welfare Society of Evanston (IWSE)."

The early leaders of IWSE were instrumental in reducing the infant mortality rate, offering pediatric and prenatal health clinics and opening one of the first baby-toddler nurseries in the country. Much work remains to be done in reducing racial inequalities so that all children can develop optimally, but Evanston and IWSE have a proud history of working to improve maternal and child health.

At the founding of IWSE in 1913, the organization distributed milk to impoverished families and was responsive to the needs of the family and that remains today. As Dr. Handler astutely pointed out, IWSE is not a childcare center, but a child development center, with the emphasis on development. We continuously adapt our services so that children can meet developmental milestones throughout their time with us.

Staff Retreat 2023 is in the books! We ate delicious tacos made by Carnitas and Barbacoa Los Chepe’s and ice cream from the C & W truck while relaxing at Lighthouse Beach on a gorgeous day. We danced to tunes by DJ Corey Bless. We played volleyball and badminton. We enjoyed chair massages from the fabulous April Jones and BodyWorksByCarla. We dunked our executive director, Stephen Vick, with water (several times!), along with a few other good sports, including Evanston City Clerk Stephanie Mendoza and our Baby Toddler Nursery Director Pamela Staples. Lots of laughter and fun on a well-deserved day off for our awesome, hard-working staff!

Thank you, Evanston Roundtable, for joining us to recognize Geri Pace!

Main Street was renamed Geraldine Pace Way in front of the Baby Toddler Nursery this week, where Pace has worked for 48 years.

07/26/2023

“Children are a blessing”

Our teacher Geri Pace was joined by IWSE and community colleagues, her daughters, cousins and friends at IWSE before we all joined Geri in the unveiling of a street sign in her name. Former parents showed up, including Renee Rosenberg, whose daughter had Geri as a teacher 25 years ago. Asked for Geri’s secret with children, Renee said, “Love. Just love.”

(It’s absolutely perfect that as Geri speaks, children in attendance can be heard. Children’s voices have been the soundtrack of Geri’s amazing life for nearly 5 decades, and she’s not ready to put it behind her. As she said, “children keep you young at heart.”

Geraldine “Geri” Pace with Executive Director Stephen Vick under Geri’s new street sign! Geri was born and raised in Evanston. She has been a teacher at IWSE for 48 years, primarily caring for toddlers. We joke she raised half the city’s kids. Now, 3 blocks in front of our building at 2200 Main Street will forever be named Geraldine Pace Way.
