With fall right around the corner and cooler nights on the way, we wanted to give everyone in our community a quick reminder before heating season gets here.

Before you turn your furnace on for the season, take the time to have it serviced and make sure everything is working properly. The same goes for any heaters you may use around your home or garage. A little maintenance ahead of time can help catch problems before they turn into something more serious.

This is also a good time to check your carbon monoxide detectors. Test them, replace the batteries if needed, and make sure you have working detectors in your home. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, and without a working detector you may not know there’s a problem.

If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, don’t ignore it. Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911.

As we head into another fall and winter here in Evanston, take a few minutes to make sure your home is ready for the colder weather. Check on family, friends, and neighbors who may need a hand getting ready too.

A little prevention can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

Today we want to recognize and thank the incredible volunteers who give so much of their time to serve Evanston and our surrounding communities.

Our volunteers answer the call at all hours of the day and night. They leave their families, jobs, dinners, holidays, and warm beds when someone in our community needs help. They put in countless hours training and responding to emergencies, and they’re there for their neighbors on some of their hardest days.

They don’t do it for the recognition. They do it because they care about this community and the people in it.

To all of our volunteers, thank you. Thank you for your time, your dedication, and the sacrifices you make to be there when you’re needed. We’re incredibly grateful for each and every one of you and proud to have you as part of Evanston Fire & Ambulance.

We also want to thank the families, employers, and loved ones who support our volunteers. Your support makes what they do possible, and we appreciate you too.

Last night during our Evanston Ambulance meeting, we had the pleasure of recognizing two outstanding members of our team.

Congratulations to Tyrell Halladay on officially receiving his EMS badge and successfully completing his probationary period. We’re excited to have you as a full member of the team and look forward to everything you’ll accomplish.

We also recognized Angie Hatch as our EMS Provider of the Month. Thank you for your dedication, hard work, and commitment to providing exceptional care to our community.

You are our why! As I looked down from the top of the mountain yesterday through the smoke and flames, I couldn't help but notice the trucks making the climb, including neighboring departments who came to assist! When I looked a little further, I could see the staging area where many emergency agencies (EMS, Highway Patrol, SO, Road and Bridge, Ellingford, etc.) had also set up. I can hear the dispatchers over the radio getting us the vital information we need to win this fight. I thought, "This is what we do when someone is in need; we pull together until the problem is solved." Volunteer or not that is the expectation. What's not expected is you, the citizens, pulling together to make sure you can help us where you can, and it doesn't go unnoticed. Because you see, from the top we could also see citizens pulling in with food, drinks, additional water tankers, ice, coolers, etc. This county is a great place to live; we all work well as a team, and YOU are our WHY! THANK YOU!

Training never stops.

Over the last month, our volunteers have spent many evenings sharpening their skills. We’ve been working on ropes and knots, practicing rope rescue techniques, and learning how to safely raise equipment to firefighters when it’s needed. We’ve also been training in confined space rescue, building the knowledge and confidence needed to handle these challenging situations.

We hope we never have to use these skills on an actual emergency, but that’s exactly why we train. When the call comes, we want to be ready to serve our community safely and effectively.

A big thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to dedicate their time to training and serving the Evanston community. Your commitment and hard work make a difference every day.
