The US Housing and Urban Development released its Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress with the point-in-time headcount results. According to the report, the number of people who are experiencing homelessness rose by 12 percent nationwide.

The AHAR states that “the 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) count is the highest number of people reported as experiencing homelessness on a single night since reporting began in 2007. The overall increase reflects the increases in all homeless populations."

Homelessness for families with children rose by 16 percent.

This increase points to an increased need within our own community. Our services are needed more than ever before.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is an international, independent, non-profit accreditor of human service providers and networks. Behavioral health service providers are required to go through a review process every three years.

In order to receive a CARF accreditation, an organization must pass an in-depth review and meet rigorous CARF guidelines for service and quality.

Impact underwent the CARF review and survey in September and received the final results in November. We received no recommendations, an accomplishment achieved by only approximately 3% of organizations.

JD is a soft-spoken and thoughtful 60-year-old man.

Coming from a difficult upbringing with few opportunities, JD didn’t believe he could ever make a living doing “real work.” Instead, he found himself caught in a criminal lifestyle, which resulted in his incarceration. After spending 30 years in prison, JD was released a few years ago.

Determined to start over, find a job, and make the most of his freedom, JD went through nine manual labor jobs in three years. Ultimately, he was unable to keep steady employment due to medical issues. JD’s mental health began to suffer, until he finally connected with a psychiatrist, who referred him to Impact’s Employment Program.

At Impact, JD has found the support he needs to succeed in his employment journey. With Impact’s help, JD found a perfect fit. He mentors at-risk youth, giving them the tools to break the cycle of violence and poverty. The youth trust JD, knowing he has been in their shoes. JD credits much of his success to his work with his Employment Specialist, Sarah. “She gave me the moral support I needed and was truly concerned about me,” says JD.

JD feels that his life is finally on track: he has a loving partner, a home, and a career. He is reconnecting with his family, rebuilding his sense of community, and looking forward to the future.

Championing participants like JD is our mission. It takes $2,800 to provide employment services for one participant. With your support, we can say yes to more participants. Help us say yes, contribute today at impactbehavioral.org/give.

Impact’s Family Supportive Housing Program provides permanent housing to families where a head of house is living with a diagnosed mental illness.

Crystal and her three sons lived in a homeless shelter for a year and a half. They shared one room—while the room provided shelter and a small kitchenette, the stove was unusable.

Crystal and her family now live in an Impact-owned apartment building in a quiet residential area with great schools and lots of amenities.

Their new home features 3 bedrooms, outdoor space—where Crystal plans to grow a vegetable garden, and brand-new appliances, including a fully functioning stove!

“I just love my new home,” says Crystal.

Because of you, we’re able to support participants like Crystal and her family. We hope you’ll consider us in your charitable contributions.

Alonzo has been with Impact for 23 years. When we say permanent supportive housing, we mean it. Alonzo moved into an Impact home when he was struggling with mental illness symptoms and substance use. He says that once he had housing Impact helped him stay on his meds. He stopped taking drugs and started going to church.

This , we celebrate Alonzo’s accomplishments and long-term success. A gift today supports Impact participants like Alonzo. Make your contribution ahead of time at impactbehavioral.org/give.

As we enter the holiday season, we’re reflecting on the support of our community.

We’re thankful to our supporters, mental health advocates, and our staff for all they do for those we serve.

We’re grateful for advocates, like the late Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who paved the way for mental health policy.

Annual Report Spotlight: Impact was chosen as one of two agencies to provide behavioral healthcare coordination services at all public housing communities in the Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) properties.

Embedding the behavioral health care coordinators in HACC communities brings mental health care directly to residents. Impact staff are coordinating gatherings to get to know the residents.

Nick, an Impact Clinical Case Manager, met Sima, a HACC resident. Sima stated that “interacting with people like Nick is providing a social outlet for residents—especially a lot of people who don’t have family or are lonely. These services and access to support helps.”

As co-chairs of the Evanston Mental Health Task Force, Patti Capouch, executive director of Impact and Cindy Castro, manager of the Behavioral Health Department at Ascension Hospital are helping to bring a wraparound mental health care to Evanston. District 65 social worker Allison Harned recognized the need and led a sub committee to investigate how agencies could better coordinate services and provide more effective care.

The new 16-unit apartment building will provide permanent supportive housing to 16 participants in downtown Skokie. A longtime Impact participant is moving out of a shared living situation into her own apartment. She requested a place with a view of St. Peter Catholic Church's chapel. The chapel can be seen from the living room of her new home.

The building features a communal space where participants can work with a housing stability specialist to learn new cooking skills, or have group sessions in art and writing. Participants will also have access to a computer room, laundry, and an exercise room.

Earlier this week, Impact staff welcomed participants to a lakefront picnic. While the weather wasn’t perfect, attendees were all smiles. This was the first in-person event for participants since the pandemic started; for some participants and staff, it was the first time they were able to meet face-to-face! We’re looking forward to continuing to foster these relationships.
