Thanks to those who shared and made gifts, we were able to raise $100,000 to help care for the health of those we serve.

This past year has been a whirlwind, and we're endlessly grateful for the continuous support from our community that makes our work possible. We can't wait to tackle 2024 with all of you!

WE ARE FINALLY ALL INN!

The successful purchase of the Margarita Inn by Connections marks a new era for our agency — and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Owning the Margarita gives our agency the necessary infrastructure to deliver services as a leader in a national movement to provide hotel-based interim housing, including onsite healthcare, case management, and employment services that move unhoused neighbors into long-term housing solutions.

The numbers speak for themselves: 86% of people who left the Margarita Inn so far this year exited for a housing solution. This is roughly double the rate of a typical pre-pandemic shelter.

This achievement would never have been possible without the grassroots movement that brought together many voices under the banner of the “We Are All Inn” coalition, including residents, community organizers, elected officials, religious leaders, and other service providers, from across Evanston to stand on the side of lending a helping to our neighbors in need.

On any given night in the Northern Cook County suburbs, 426 adults and children are experiencing homelessness and staying outside or in an emergency shelter.

Yesterday, homelessness service providers, advocates, and experts met for discussion at the annual AHAND (Association of Homeless Advocates in the North/Northwest District) Legislative Breakfast. Special thanks to Kylon Hooks, Deputy Chief Homelessness Officer of Illinois and the facilitator for the event, and everyone who attended and participated in the discussion.

Today, Connections for the Homeless held our annual Gift of Giving event. More than 150 donors purchased gifts and wrapped them for almost 600 of their neighbors. The magic of the season is about giving *and* receiving. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, donors, and staff who made today's event a joy to take part in.

You can't understand homelessness in Evanston and the northern suburbs without understanding what's happening with homelessness in Chicago. And you can't understand homelessness in Chicago without reading this history by Chicago's urban historian and TikTok phenom Shermann "Dilla" Thomas.

The only folks who should be saying "send them back" are the Indigenous Native Americans who were displaced via the 1833 Treaty of Chicago.

Happy Thanksgiving! Last Sunday, Skokie Valley Baptist Church stopped by with the spirit of the giving season and cooked a delicious meal for residents at the Margarita Inn. Folks ate and chatted together, and we even had enough food to share with our friends at drop-in! We're always thankful to share warm food and good feelings with our community.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy holiday💝

This past weekend, our Winter Warmth event took place at the Lake Street Church, bringing together nearly 100 compassionate volunteers in a collective effort to extend warmth and care to those in need within our community.

In the course of a few hours, we distributed hundreds of winter coats and snow boots to nearly 600 people. Thanks to the Reva & David Logan Foundation and those who hosted winter gear drives, we were able to assemble an extensive collection of coats and boots of various sizes and colors to suit everyone's needs.

The spirit of giving and solidarity was palpable as volunteers organized donations and helped those attending the event find the cold-weather gear they needed. As Connections CEO Betty Bogg put it, “There’s really nothing that can compare to the satisfaction that comes from providing someone with something they urgently need. Today, we gave out warm clothes and good feelings.”

Connections' participants had the opportunity to display their artwork at the Sherri Takiff Zirlin Community Art Wall at First Bank Chicago in Skokie. Many of these pieces were created during our weekly art group at the Margarita Inn, led by our resident Behavioral Health Specialist Molly Bartholomew.

"Our Wednesday Art Group at the Margarita is an opportunity for participants to process both their challenges as well as aspirations and dreams," says Molly. "This is a safe space where they can focus on the creative process and explore new artistic terrain."

Our two drop-in locations are open every weekday to provide free toiletries, food, groceries, and clothing for any of our neighbors in need. Right now, we are COMPLETELY out of several of these toiletries, and running low on several more. Host a drive or donate travel sizes of these products so we can meet the needs of our community.

This October, Connections is celebrating our 39th anniversary.

In those 39 years, we have grown from a small overnight shelter run by religious leaders and community volunteers in the basement of Lake Street Church into an organization that serves almost 5,000 individuals a year through a wide range of services.

Learning from our participants, new research, observing solutions discovered by other communities, and feedback from our Evanston neighbors, we continue to implement innovative and dignified practices to end homelessness.
