Ready to Celebrate

Rhea County took another step toward the July Scopes Trial Centennial celebration this past week as workers installed a marker designating a memorial tree on the courthouse lawn.

Pictured from left are Leon Locke, Ricky Parker and Corey Bardin, who placed the marker at the base of a sugar maple which will be dedicated July 19, as part of the Scopes Trial Play & Festivities.

Descendants of individual who played a role in the 1925 trial will be on hand and will share family stories about the case.

With the cooperation of County Executive Jim Vincent and his staff, the Rhea Heritage Preservation Foundation purchased the tree and stone as part of its contribution to the centennial and this year’s festivities.

More information about the centennial program, and a link to purchase tickets to various events are available at www.scopes100.com and www.rheaheritage.com/scopes-trial-play/ .
