Faces of Evansville Waterways
Follow us on Tuesdays to see the faces of Evansville's wild residents that appreciate all you do to keep their home and drinking water clean. Enjoy the views, and strive every day to do a little better for the faces we share space with! Today's face is a red-shouldered hawk calling from a tree at Howell Wetlands. Recycle what you can to preserve habitat for animals that live here too!

See the below graphic designed by RiverLink.org, to learn more about the changes to storm water run off with the addition of hardscapes to the landscape. As we replace fields with impervious surface, more runoff is created, less water infiltrates the ground, and less water evaporates. This can also contribute to flooding. Our office helps ensure new construction plans for these changes and designs a place for this extra run off water to go.

Can you pick out the issues making their way to the storm drain?

The #1 urban pollutant to our waters is sediment. You can see a couple examples of that depicted. Fertilizer, grass clippings, and leaves increase the nutrient load in the water causing issues in the natural water systems. There is also oil from a car leak washing into the drain. Even without hosing, rain washes this harmful chemical to our waterways. Take a look around your yard for simple changes you can make to reduce your impact on our waterways.
