Please join us Saturday, May 23, 2026 from 2:30-4:00 here at the Evarts Public Library, as we welcome Connie Wade and find out more about her book: The Sorcerer of Crank's Fork: Inspired by the life of George Burkhart, the man who lived 125 years
George isn't your ordinary ancestor. He's my fifth, or maybe sixth, great-grandfather, depending on which cousin's math you trust, and if you've ever tried keeping count of Appalachian kinfolk, you know that's like counting stars. The article gave the facts, or what passed for facts in those days, but the stories don't always fit in a newspaper column. They said George could charm warts clean off a man, whisper away a fever, and shoot a ghost right between the eyes. They said his mule never aged, his pipe never went out, and his fox could outthink most schoolteachers. Some folks swore he was born old. Others figured he just never bothered to die.
