On Thursday night at 20:14 hours, Raystown Ambulance Service responded alongside multiple EMS, fire, Pennsylvania Turnpike personnel, and Pennsylvania State Police to a reported vehicle fire inside the westbound Allegheny Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76 westbound).
Due to the location of the fire within the tunnel, the westbound tunnel was closed to all traffic while fire suppression and emergency operations were conducted. Approximately 150 motorists from nearly 80 vehicles were safely evacuated from the tunnel and transported by bus to a nearby Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance facility.
Motorists were permitted to return to their vehicles at approximately 02:45 hours. All vehicles cleared the tunnel shortly after 03:00 hours, and the roadway was reopened at approximately 03:20 hours.
