Twelve elementary students prepared their Favorite Afternoon Snack recipes at the annual Future Chefs competition held at Le Bistro at Sno-Isle TECH recently. 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Each future chef received a chef's coat and hat, an apron, a certificate, and a bucket of fun prizes. Students worked with adult mentors to make and display their snacks. The foods were judged by School Board President Kyle Kennedy, Superintendent Alison Brynelson and three district administrators. The following students won the grand prize, a bike and safety helmet, donated by Sodexo!

Fun Kid Food - Aubree Hernandez- Doggy Snack and Cat Drink
Healthiest recipe -Tre Wells- Shrimp Salad
Judges Choice - Lily Zakhary- Watermelon Sorbet
Most original recipe - Elise Lee- Honeycrisp Harvest Donut

Sponsored by Sodexo food services, Future Chefs is designed to help educate students about healthier eating habits. Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to create recipes to submit to Nutrition Services with hopes of being selected to compete in the competition. This year, students from Challenger, Fairmount, Mukilteo, Olivia Park, Picnic Point, and Serene Lake elementary schools, were selected to compete in the event.

Congratulations to all future chefs for their culinary skills!

Students Celebrating Pride Month 🌈🌈

Across Mukilteo School District, students are finding meaningful ways to build connection, celebrate one another, and create welcoming school communities for everyone. June’s Pride Month activities are one example of how schools support student belonging through positive, student-centered experiences.

At one school, students are preparing a Crew Time lesson focused on inclusion, kindness, and supporting one another. Student groups are also planning fun activities throughout the week, including a PRIDE Club celebration with cake, snacks, and a spirited march around campus. A little birdie told us that they may even hide tiny rainbow ducks around their school for students and staff to discover.

Student leaders have been creating opportunities for connection and belonging all year long. From the Rainbow Connection group’s participation in this spring’s Celebrate Diversity Night to helping staff create bulletin boards and displays recognizing heritage and awareness months, students and staff continue to celebrate the many identities, cultures, and experiences that make each school community unique.

WASA Student Leadership Award 👏🎉
Congratulations to Kamiak High School student Mikayla Caro, who was recently recognized with a regional Student Leadership Award from the Washington Association of School Administrators.

Mikayla has made a lasting impact on the Kamiak community through her leadership, integrity, and commitment to lifting others up. As ASB President, she leads with humility and consistently shines the spotlight on her peers. Her dedication to inclusivity is evident through her involvement in Unified Athletics, where she helps create meaningful connections between students of all abilities through sports and shared experiences.

Mikayla’s contributions extend across academics, arts, athletics, and student leadership. She is a strong student academically and an accomplished performer, participating in Concert Choir Kantorei, Jazz Choir, and Kamiak musicals. She also co-wrote a state-winning play and intentionally created opportunities for others to be recognized and celebrated. In addition, she competes on the softball field, demonstrating teamwork and leadership both on and off the field.

We are proud of Mikayla and grateful for the positive example she sets for our students and staff every day. See less

Our School Board President Kyle Kennedy shares thoughts through a Beacon article, "The Promise of what can be created next."

"Each spring in Mukilteo School District, something remarkable happens that doesn’t fit neatly into a single ceremony or headline. It unfolds across classrooms, auditoriums, and neighborhoods, from kindergarten celebrations and elementary transitions to middle school promotions and high school graduations. It is a season of movement, of quiet reflection, and of bold steps forward as students at every level cross meaningful thresholds.

As school board president, I have the privilege of witnessing these moments through my attendance at many of these celebrations each year, not as isolated milestones, but as part of a larger story written collectively by students, families, educators, and our broader community."

Thank you, Mukilteo Schools Foundation!!

Reading in any language increases literacy … which is why Mukilteo Schools Foundation prioritizes expanding multilingual literature options in school libraries.

Today Odyssey Elementary received a check for $2,500 to purchase more books that represent their students’ diverse languages and cultures.

Families will get their first peek at the expanded multilingual section in September.

Cartoonist Visits Lake Stickney Elementary 😀😃

Steve Raymond, our Lake Stickney Elementary librarian, invited cartoonist and former elementary school teacher Aron Nels Steinke (pictured obove right with Raymond) to visit the school and share his work as an author and illustrator of graphic novels. Steinke is best known for creating the "Mr. Wolf’s Class" series and his standalone graphic novel "Speechless." 📚

Lake Stickney students learned about Steinke books and how he illustrated them. Students were live models for the character sketches as seen in the composite drawing. Students were inspired and impressed by his cartoonist skills and engaging stories. It was an amazing experience for students to meet a cartoonist and established author.

Staff Shout Out!

Mukilteo School District’s Family Engagement Liaison program plays an important role in helping schools, families, and community partners work together to support student success. Our Family Engagement Liaisons (FELs) serve as a bridge between home and school, helping families feel welcomed, informed, connected, and empowered throughout their child’s educational journey. ❤

FELs help families navigate school systems, connect with community resources, and build relationships that strengthen trust and belonging. Whether assisting families with food or housing resources, helping parents better understand academic expectations, organizing workshops, or hosting educational events, the goal is always the same: ensuring every family feels like valued partners in education. ♥

The Family Engagement Center, located at Explorer Middle School next to our Teaching and Learning Center, serves as a hub for this work by offering workshops, volunteer opportunities, and connections to community services. Families can access support with technology, language learning, parenting resources, food assistance, and more.

At the heart of this work is a simple belief: when families, schools, and communities partner together, students benefit. Through collaboration, relationship-building, and support, our Family Engagement Liaison team continues to strengthen connections that help every student succeed. 👏

Recently, the Family Engagement Center hosted a Community Partner Celebration and Open House where more than 250 attendees connected with resources, signed up for food and clothing support, accessed free youth bus passes, and enjoyed giveaways and community activities.
